Color flow is royal icing which could crack... you need to have it thick enough and let it dry long enough. The nice part about it is I use a 00/0/ 1 size tip with my royal icing to add detail on top. For myself I can get really fine detail with royal icing/colour flow. I also like the look.

Color melts are the chocolates you refer to , no? They are stronger, but can crack if dropped . While I have multi decorated colours with colour melts sometimes I find they are a real pain in the touchie. Some colours don't seem to melt as well.
How about color melts for main big piece and use royal icing on top for fine detail. They do that to Easter bunny chocolates lots of time.
Of course chocolate is the answer!
