I think I'm selling myself short on my cakes lately. I've gotten much better since I started a year ago. I only sell to family and friends and acquaintances. This cake was for an old co-worker. Its a 10" chocolate 2 layers with choc bc and mmf. All the details are mmf, except for the dots on the dice, the lettering, and the letters and shapes on the cards, which is all piped in bc. So how much would you charge?

We would probably charge in the $100-150 range for that cake. We are in California, which like MD requires a licensed and inspected commercial kitchen to legally sell cakes, so you would need to take into account kitchen rental costs when setting prices.

I did a similar cake, a 9x6, serving about 25. Considering the details, I charged $100 for mine. For a 10-inch round, which I count as serving 38, I would charge $150.00.

Party cake servings are 50% larger than wedding cake servings, a 10" round would be about 28 party-size servings.

Even that size is skimpy if the cake will be cut into wedges, we tell customers that a 10" round party cake will typically serve 16-20 people.

Wow. I'm in NC and did a similar cake (not as detailed) as an 8" and only asked $50. I think I need to raise my prices (which is what my hubby has been saying for a year now lol) Now I'm depressed! [/img]

Have to do some serious confession time here...since I'm mainly doing cakes in my spare time I've not been too good at tracking expenses...(bad, BAD baker!) But, yes - doing everything from home - so that keeps costs lower for the most part.
