Im making a very special wedding cake at the end of the month and the bride was talking about putting a heart in the sand with there names in it. Does anyone know of a way to make the sand with a heart and names in it like what you would see at the beach????

You could also use finely ground cookie crumbs or graham cracker crumbs. Search the photo gallery for:
beach AND sand
and you should get some descriptions with the photos that will say what they used to get that specific "look"

The brown sugar is nice though because it acts like wet sand. You can pack it down and when you want to write on it, it will keep its shape. Im not sure if you can achieve that with cookie crumbs.

Just finished a beach theme cake and used light brown sugar. I wet the fondant then put the brown sugar on and drew a heart. I also used tiny flowers to say happy birthday.

Go with the graham cracker crumbs.
