Gold piping

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to cake decorating and want to know how you get gold icing on the cake. I've read that you mix Wilton leaf green and golden yellow, but does it really make it gold like this: http://thecaketressblog.com/2010/10/golden-eiffel-tower-wedding-cake/ or has this whole cake been hand painted with gold lustre dust? I think I read somewhere that you might have to go over a couple of times. Is that correct?!?

I tried Americolor gold icing color and it's more like a yellow than gold. I'm looking for real gold look or antique gold look. Thanks!

That looks hand painted on. I do not believe that is the icing color. It is probably luster dust and vodka painted on. You can see that up close.

Hope that helps.

I agree with McGF, gold luster dust mixed with clear alcohol, vodka, or lemon extract (not lemon juice) and painted on. And, by the way, welcome to CC!

There. Their. They're not the same.

I hope I die before "your" becomes the official contraction of "you are."

Here is an antique gold look I did using modeling chocolate and gold dust with lemon extract.

You can get the same effect using brown or chocolate fondant as a base. If you want a lighter gold, color your fondant either light yellow or gold and brush over that. It will enhance your gold dusting and help with coverage
