Accepting Credit Cards Over Phone?
Business By designdiva22 Updated 11 Jun 2012 , 2:56am by costumeczar
I am get inquiries on and off from potential customers who find me online and want to pay by credit card. They are not local but want treats delivered locally in the area and want to pay over the phone. I would love to accept those orders but I don't have credit card processing facility now.
I was exploring some options and since I already accept Paypal, I thought of using Paypal Virtual Terminal but it has a monthly fee of $30 plus the single transaction fee per transaction.
Is there any other option without the monthly fee? I am not sure of orders that pay by credit card every month and don't want to keep paying the fee when I don't use the facility.
Thanks for any help!!
I use "The Square" to take credit card orders over the phone!! I LOVE IT!! You just attach "the square" to your phone and swipe the card OR if you don't have the card or over the phone orders, you just key the card info manually on your phone or computer.
I used to use Paypal, but kept having too many issues with it, so I switched. HTH
I've heard of Square but I don't have a smartphone. Does it work with regular mobile phones?
I think it only works with Androids and I-Phone, but don't quote me on that. Go to the website and it will give you all the requirements.

I use Google Merchant. I get the customer's email address then email them an invoice. It has a hyper link they click and they pay. I don;t take their info over the phone.
With the FL Cottage Food Law I can't take payments over the internet... I use Square when they pick up the order. But I wonder if I could use it over the phone for deposits and such and still be legal.. hmm
The square could not be easier. I say phone upgrade
It's hard to find something that doens't have a monthly fee.

So true about the monthly fee!
Square works with iPads too, if you get an iPad and use wifi only there would be no additional monthly charges for data.
I have been doing research on the mobile credit card devices and have found many negative reviews about the square. A ton of reviews have said that the company does not answer their phones or return emails and that many customers are having issues getting their money. The company has issues with purchases that are typed into the phone instead of swiped. (i.e. if you wanted to take a credit card over the phone instead of in person). If you have over $1000 in sales per week through this type of sale, the company will not release the money to you and many people have been saying that they are missing thousands of dollars because of this. I was so excited about the square until i started to do research online
Here is a more detailed review covering some of the issues above. Placing holds on transactions with cards that are not swiped is understandable considering they are much more likely to be fraudulent (the funds are released after 30 days). Having to wait days to get a reply from customer service is a problem, but as with all services you get what you pay for.

I'm considering Intuit GoPayment. Does anyone on CC have experience with them? They seem to have better reviews than square. My business is just starting up so I'm looking to avoid contracts and start-up fees.

I took a payment for $988 over the phone this past week using square, and it was in my bank the next day. Maybe I came in under the limit.

The way I understand it, only the amount over $1000 for card-not-present transactions within 7 days gets held. So if you took that payment 2 days ago and you take another payment for $500 over the phone tomorrow, you would get $12 deposited to your account, and the remaining $488 would be held for 30 days. Any further phone transactions for the next few days after that would also be held for 30 days.
