Geeze...I'm getting all kinds of bad visuals about a black wedding cake on my calender. The bride wants vanilla/almond flavored icing but wants the bottom tier black with white accents....So, I can't start with chocolate!

Has anyone used their airbrush on buttercream to make black for a wedding cake???

Ooh, ooh - somebody talk me DOWN!

I'd try talking her into fondant so it can be peeled off and the guest wont have black teeth and tounges. Otherwise I'd use chefmaster liqua gel to color the BC. It takes very little to get a true black and has no bitter taste nor do you need to let it set overnight to intensify.

I have not done this yet but it is the entire reason I purchased an airbrush. In my airbrush class they said apply really light coats. Let each dry between and the keep applying. Apparently it should turn their teeth purple because we there is a lot less color actually being used. Please post how it goes if you try it because I'd like to be able to do this someday.

Yes, you should use your airbrush. Airbrushing black is a much better choice than coloring your icing black all the way through. Two to three coats, and it will look awesome. You'll use very little color compared to tinting all that icing, and you'll save a lot of time and frustration... it's easier, with great results.
