I'd really like to start making some 'serious' cakes but that's what I'm getting at the moment - mostly birthday, anniversary and baptism cakes. No way I could survive on wedding cakes - there are very few weddings here and the traditional wedding cake is not fondant.
After making my first castle cake I'm suddenly getting more orders for them as it's something new here and getting quite popular. I quite enjoyed the first one, I'm making the second one now. They wanted exactly the same as the first one but I told them no way, similar but somehow different - colors, decorations, theme.
I'm afraid the third, fourth one ecc. would be very boring but they are not difficult to make, just a bit time consuming due to small details. However, I wouldn't like to do smaller ones as it's not cost effective to me and have the standard size, let's say 50 servings for xxx $. The problem is the families are not usually large here and even the birthday parties are smallish, the average number of guests is 15 - 20. But 20 serv castle is not even nice looking and after seeing photos of 50 serv cakes they get the idea it would look the same (and it wouldn't). Do you have something like 'standard' size for xxx price and doing only those? Thanks for your replies!
Hi Paula, I have done 2 castle cakes and they were in different sizes. So what I would do is make a castle maybe out of an 8" and 5" round cakes. Then when you add the towers it will look bigger and fuller? From these two sizes you will get around30 portions. But I wouldn't make it smaller than those sizes.
Here is a tiny 6" castle cake I made to go along with cupcakes for my great-niece's birthday. The towers were fondant wrapped around paper towel rolls with ice cream cone turrets. I thought for its size and lack of detail, it turned out pretty cute. The cake itself is buttercream.
