I have been asked to make a cake for a gentleman who has been given not long to live. His birthday is approaching and the family wants to celebrate his last birthday. This situation breaks my heart but I want to do something special for them. They just want a small 2 tiered cake, couldnt tell me any intrest, colors or hobbies to go off of, just it's his last birthday so they want to celebrate w/ him. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks!! icon_sad.gif

wow! that's a tall order! i would just try to put it out of your mind about what the cake is for and just make it a celebration about his birthday..anything fun you can make will probably lift the spirits of him and his family.

good luck to you

see if the family would give you pictures of them all with him to use. make them into edible pictures and do something on the cake with them.

make fondant frames for them and put them all around the cake. like a gallery or something.

I agree, the key word here is family. Love the idea of photos in a frame but he might not want to cut it and he also knows it's his last cake so that might hit too close to home for him. How about a people cookie cutter - a boy and a girl - several of them in a ring around the bottom of the cake - looking like they're holding hands. A family surrounding him with love. Then each family member can take a cookie home with them. You could pipe their names on each cookie.

did they say anything about flavors he would like?

what if you created a special cookie flavor, his cookie, and packaged up cookies for everyone with the recipe?

and lined the cake with the cookies!

still might be too emotional though!

such a hard project!
