I have someone asking for a cake to feed 30 people for a graduation. I looked up the serving sizes, and it says that a 9x13 is supposed to feed 50 people. That seems like such a tiny cake!

They want an xbox.

That to be exact. Would 3 9x13 layers be generous enough to really feed that many people?

Also, I'm still learning, but I think my cakes have been getting better and better. I'm still at the jittery beginner stage doing it for other people. Would $135 be a fair price? I was debating whether or not to do the controller for an $8 since it would be different ingredients. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

Yes, a 9x13 2 layer cake serves 45ppl.

I used to say the same thing, lol. How in the world can this cake feed that amount of ppl. But it does icon_smile.gif

if the slices are cut to portion correctly, it will feed the correct amount of ppl. like a 2x2 pc of cake or a 1x2.Party slices and wedding slices differ in about 1" of cake in size. If you really look at the slice once its cut, its a good pc of cake bc the cake is 2 layers and not just 1 layer.

Look at it this way: the average cake mix cake makes 24 cupcakes. That same mix baked in a 10" round pan would serve 15 to 20.
A 9x13 pan used 1 1/2 mixes so you can see how it would serve 30 or more.

The actually volume of cake for a party size piece and a wedding size piece is the same because a wedding piece is based on a 4" high cake whereas a party cake is a 2" piece. So if you're looking at a 9x13 cake serving 50, that's based on it being a 2 layer, 4" high cake. So the piece is 1x2x4 which is 8 cubic inches. If you only did a single layer that was 2" high, the piece would be 2x2x2 which is still 8 cubic inches but the cake only serves 50.

It may seem small to you, but really, it's a decent size piece of cake.

Also, in terms of pricing, don't price based on the number of people they need to feed, but the size of cake you need to make in order to get them the design they want. So, if you're making the xbox cake, and it involves carving, plus fondant, I wouldn't be charging closer to $200. I charge $150 for a two layer 9x13 buttercream iced cake. Nothing fancy. Don't short change yourself on a cake, especially if it's going to take you longer and is more work.
