Just For Fun...weird Items In Your Decorating Kit.

I was sorting through my cake "tool box" and realized I tend to use alot of things that were not made for cake decorating. The strangest thing for me happens to be part of a flyswatter. Wait, wait...it was new/
I needed to make a diamond plate design for part of a cake. I could not find a mat that was just right for the job. Then on my way out of the store, I saw it. A perfect diamond pattern, and only 99 cents!!
A syringe! I use it to get out air bubbles in my fondant. An actual medical syringe. Works great.
Unflavored dental floss for cutting and leveling cake.
Unused panty hose legs to filter out lumps when using royal icing and small tips.
Unused panty hose legs.
I have some of those too but I use mine for dusting my surfaces with powdered sugar. I have a lot of toddler toys/snacks on my work bench too to distract my 14 month old son. He has figured out now if I'm at that table working then there is something yummy and sweet that he MUST HAVE!
Hi,
Good ideas
I save some of my bags/netting that onions come in and use it to make the designs on basketball cakes
This one isn't super weird, but I use a putty knife to smooth my cakes. It's my favorite tool, and it only cost me $2!
oh, and also (but i haven't tried this myself) my local cake shop holds classes for decorating. they use new, clean baby socks to hold powdered sugar or cornstarch in for dusting fondant/gumpaste.
I have a mesh that I got from Home Depot that is used for screen doors -- but it comes in a variety of different patterns. I have a diamond one that I use to impress fondant to make snakeskin!
Paint rollers, putty knife, dental floss, and a wrist rest my dh made from a camera tripod and a coffee can.
I use a pair of dog nail clippers (that were of course brand new) to cut my dowels. They are easier on my hands than traditional cutters.
Metria, you're my hero. I need a line impression mat but that's so much better because it's much wider!
Love it.
I have the panty hose and level as well as a straight edge with a 90 degree straight edge on the bottom and the side but turns out I prefer my bench scraper.
And a heating pad for keeping chocolate soft.
A syringe! I use it to get out air bubbles in my fondant. An actual medical syringe. Works great.
Such a good idea, I'm stealing this! Til now I would pop the bubble at an angle with a pin then try and smooth the air out, but I'm sure this works better.
all thread (aka threaded rod) to make a ribbed impression:
Wow, metria - fabulous idea! Love that! Does it work well for texturing bows?

Yes This technique was suggested/demonstrated to me by my local cake club. I used it all over this cake in my blog post: http://cakeoricandothat.blogspot.com/2012/01/congratulations-francis-ann-marie.html
That's exactly what I had in mind too - thanks to metria - and I have already texted one of my brothers, who is plumber, to get me one! Thanks for sharing all your ideas everyone!
Check out this cool idea. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan on making one.
