Hi.

I am due to make a carved taxi cake in a couple of weeks. I don't know how to get the appearance of a realistic car, ie, with the underneath of the car hollow? I have seen some pics where people have achieved this to a verry high standard, and the wheels are not at all squashed, and there is a very neat gap between the cake board and the underside of the car/cake.

Does anybody know how this is achieved??

Would really appreciate any suggestions or tips.

I did this with a snowmobile cake- although in the pics it doesn't look raised- after the fondant covering and the buttercream snow-you couldn't even tell it was over an inch off the board! But I drilled posts into the board where the wheels/tracks were going to go...then screwed the cake board on top of these posts. The posts were completely covered by the rice krispie treat wheels.

If you can buy Mike McCarey's DVD on how to make car cakes. It will teach you everything from how to make templetes to the wheels. I watched that dang thing 5 times while I made my first car. You are going to use a piece of styrofoam painted with black floral spray (design master at Micheals) it won't eat the foam. Or cover it with black fondant. The car will be on a cake board and will be secured with melted chocolate to the styrofoam after it's almost done, minus the wheels. You'll attach those after putting it on the styrofoam. Please order the video! He is a way better teacher that I am and you will save yourself so many mistakes that it will pay for itself. Best of luck!
