My brother is coming home from a long tour in Afghaniston next month....and all he wants is a drink!!

I want to make a beer cooler cake filled with sugar bottles and sugar ice- but have never worked with isomalt- I am a beginner in the cake decorating.

My question is- how do you make the ice? Is it hard? Do I need special tools? I haven't watched the tutorial for the bottle yet-but am wondering how to make a label for the bottles?

I tend to take on tough things and they kind of fail- so any words of advice in making this would be helpful!

Thanks in advance!

I've made only one beer bottle cake and for the ice I used Isomalt. I cooked it to about 320degrees and then I poured in crinkled non-stick foil, once it cools off you can lift it and it looks like ice chips. The images I found them on internet, I saved them in my hard drive and then printed them in my edible ink printer.
Hope that helps, good luck!! and don't forget to bring your creation to CC for 'show and tell' icon_smile.gif

I'm definitely on the beginner level and did one a little while ago. I used real bottles because I wasn't brave enough to try the isomalt. For the ice I used the clear unflavored gelatin. There are definitely nicer beer cooler cakes out there than the one I made, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

Hi, I did a beer bucket cake for my brother in laws 21st (have a look at my pics if you'd like). The isomalt was really easy to work - i used a candy thermometer to be sure & then I just poured it into ice cube trays of different shapes & sizes so it would look more authentic. I think it came out well. Check out the makeyourownmolds.com tutorial (which is on CC aswell). Good luck. icon_smile.gif

There is a brand new ice cube mold on the market now, it's great! The two piece bottle molds are awesome as well. I think most people just leave the label off the bottles but you could do them with edible images. If you need more info, just PM me, I'm happy to help.

Thanks...I'm going to do a little more research on this, b/c he is coming home in 3 weeks...but I am wondering what isomalt tastes like- I've never even seen it in person..is it hard candy? And would chocolate bottles be better?

i am going to try to make my own mold- I researched and it looks like the amazing mold putty would be my best option- does that sound right?

I am wondering what isomalt tastes like- I've never even seen it in person..is it hard candy? And would chocolate bottles be better or do people actually eat isomalt bottles?
Also how do you make a label for the bottles? - Should I invest in an edible printer? If so-what are recommendations for those?

I am going to do a ice bucket with Diet cans for my daughter soon, I've decided to use rock candy for the ice....I'm still a little scared to use the isomalt!

I vote for Chocolate bottles...yum!

Take the image to Walmart or a grocery store and they can print an edible image for you. Anywhere from $4 to $7 a sheet is what they charge in my area.

You can eat isomalt in small quantities but if you eat it in excessive quantities it can cause stomach upsets...begins with a D!! :S

It just tastes like sugar.

If I were making the beer bottles I would use the pour-able silicone rather than the putty
