Blissful Bakes

I've been cyber squatting on this URL for nearly 2 years and now it's time to launch the business.
I'm not getting positive feedback on this name as everyone thinks they can helpfully suggest all the cliche names that of course no one has ever thought of before.

Anyhow, I have been brainstorming other names for a few days now and keep coming back to this one. I can visualize it in the online lists of wedding cake vendors, but I feel it has enough whimsy to also appeal to kiddie parties. The alliteration helps with memorability and "bakes" I feel keeps it general enough to not be limited to just cakes, in the event I wanted to do farmers markets with breads, muffins, and jellies.

BUT- still getting a lot of, "Huh? What's it called?" or "Oh. You know, you should use "nameofeveryothercakebusinessinexistence" because that's really cute."

So, I know enough about business to know that if you have a bad name, you might as well just shut down. But I can't tell if my name is "bad" meaning, hard to say, hard to remember, hard to distinguish industry, etc., or if it's just the naysayers who don't know what they are talking about. Also, there are maybe 3 other Blissful Bakes in the world, but they are in UK and UAE. So that makes me think the name sounds a bit "off" in standard American English. Maybe it's because "bakes" is seen more as a verb rather than as a noun, as it is being used here and that's turning people off?

So, opinions, please! Be honest. I have a few other names I've been bouncing around, so I'm not committed to this and I don't want to be stuck with a sucky name.

I think you're right about the Bakes being a verb. It's not bad at all though. It's kind of like Alton Brown's show Good Eats (which I love by the way).

What are your other names? Is the Blissful Bakes the one you have your heart set on? Or do you have some you like just as well?

I actually like it.

I like it. My business is Beggin for Cake (play on my last name which is Begg). A friend suggested it and I loved it! My husband didn't, but I went with what I liked! Don't worry, as you get established, it will catch on! It is original and that is the important factor. Remember, everyone has an opinion on everything and you will not please them. Just make sure it is something that you love and go with it. You are the one that has to live with it!

The others are:

-The Beltway Baker (I live in the DC Metro area and the beltway is the highway that loops around the city. It's a common adjective here. Some companies are called "Beltway Bandits" meaning they are government contractors. Hubby thought this sounded a little too "governmental."

-Bonafide Bakehouse (or Baking Co.) - suggested by some friends when I was playing around and said it was time for my cake thing to become "bona fide" a la "Oh Brother Where Art Thou."

DC DreamCakes - the logo having an enlarged D and enlarged C to carry in the DC aspect. Since I live in the Virginia suburbs, I'm not sold on the "DC" bit. The suburban market (mine) is much different from the urban one.

I'm not in love with anything. I just need it to be classy enough for brides, fun enough for kids and a little of both for the bat mitzvahs and sweet 16s. And there are a lot of cakers here, so we're a dime a dozen. I think a unique name that stands out if pretty valuable here, especially when you're looking at the endless list of vendors on The Knot. But I'm just now realizing that what sounds unique to the caking crowd, is not necessarily appealing to the masses.

Stephanie- I think your name is so clever!

When I first read your post I thought the name was "Blissful Bakers." I guess you see what you expect to see! It wasn't til I got to the part about "bakes" not being commonly used that I realized I misread. That being said, you may consider getting another domain name with blissful bakers that redirects to your real website if you find that others make the same mistake! I do like the name.

I like the name but I agree with rlowry03, my instinct was to assume it was the Blissful Baker or plural Bakers. If you can get hold of the other domain names it may be worth it.

I agree, people always come up with a new name for your business that a thousand other people are already using. I have a blog and when the cottage food law passed I really planned on changing my business name and then I thought, nope....I have the domain, I have a "small" handful of followers and I don't want to start over so I kept that for my business name and my blog. And FYI, I'm pretty sure everything about my name is bad for business, it's long, it's a little hard to say but I think it's memorableicon_smile.gif

kger, I like it. It's distinctive enough that it will be easy to remember, but it's not so "out there" that it will be easy to forget.

My family voted down the one I wanted, although I have to admit they had valid arguments. But if that's the one you want, I say go for it.

I could change it to The Blissful Baker or Bakehouse or Baking Co. I have no following or customers or anything like that.

And I think Keep on Caking is totally memorable! I've been trying to come up with something "cake-able" and everything is either taken or there's a similar name in my area.

Kelly, I am right down the road from you so I get the Beltway Baker (how about capitolcakes?) LOL

My vote is still Blissful Bakes. That way, you are not limiting what you do. You can get into pastries or dessert buffets or whatever you want.

I am in Winchester. My not yet business name is very clever and original. Cakes by Annie. ROFL

I am still trying to figure out if I want this as a side business. It has been working very well as a hobby for the last 15 years haha. I have a full time job which takes up a lot of time. It's technology based and I have to dedicate a lot of time outside of work for education and training.

I already have a business plan and website and everything (unpublished for now) for the cake thing. I just haven't made the commitment yet.

I just thought of one. It doesn't seem that "zazzle" is trademarked. What about Zazzle Cakes? Is it weird?

Zazzle is already a company.

http://www.zazzle.ca/

they have nothing to do with cake, but they sell neat stuff if you have a business name. They will print it onto aprons etc..

I still like Blissful Bakes
