I did a cake for my friends son over the weekend. It was a hockey jersey cake of his favorite team.
It turned out really well. I had a lot of issues when making it, so the fact that the finished project looked great I was over the moon. I delivered the cake and they were really happy with it too. Awesome I thought.
Today I talked to her and she said that most of the guests did not like fondant. They all picked it off the cake.
So now I am blue!
Has anyone had this happen before?

Oh yeah, I always tell my customers that no one buys fondant for the taste. I only use pre-made fondants, so I can't speak for MMF, but some definitely taste better than others. Wilton fondant has a horrible taste, but I find that Fondx and Fondarific have better tastes. Chocopan is delicious, but it's WAY more expensive and I find it harder to work with.

I always use a nice layer of buttercream on my fondant cakes and if people want to peel the fondant off they still have plenty of the good stuff underneath. HTH!

I used Wilton fondant on my very first cake (...which was three cakes ago so this isn't exactly a broad span of time) and it tasted AWFUL and I loathed it. I think the only time I took another bite of it after my initial taste was after a few drinks when my tastebuds weren't as sensitive. Since it's probably the most common fondant some people assume they won't like the fondant even if it's really quite tasty since they figure it all tastes the same and won't even try it. I wouldn't be too hurt by it, they ate the rest of the cake right?

And I always tell my customers that fondant has a bad rap because people have only had the bad stuff. I make a version of MFF, and it's divine. If people choose to peel it off, that's their biz. I can't say I blame them with the bad rap it has before they even try it. Oh well.

I love my MMF too. My kids are always hanging around looking for scraps.
The lady I did the cake for has had one of my cakes with the MMF before so she new what it was like.
She was I think dissapointed that they were picking it officon_sad.gif
I also like to put a nice layer of buttercream on underneath as well.

I do the same, tell the customers in advance that some guests will not enjoy the fondant, and I have others who love it.

Do find people will still go ahead and order the cake anyway with the fondant?

I don't have that problem. Sometimes it must be made with fondant. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it anyways. Peel fondant off. Eat cake. Done.

I've found that no matter how GOOD the flavor of the fondant might be (including several varieties of MMF, satin ice, etc), most of the people I know, still have a problem with the TEXTURE of fondant.

Honestly, it's just not very pleasant to eat chewy, supper sweet, "goop" (for lack of a better term), with otherwise perfect tasting cake! I'll eat scraps of fondant all day long when I'm making a cake, but I always peel it off when eating the cake itself. I carefully balance my cakes and frosting (usually SMBC) to avoid them being overly sweet. But adding fondant on top of that always messes up the flavor profile, makes it too sweet, and totally messes up the texture and mouth feel of perfect cake.

I haven't been selling cakes in a while, but when I did, I always gave customers this fondant talk: "Some brands of fondant have an unpleasant flavor, but my homemade (or favorite brand) fondant has a very nice flavor. Still, all fondant is VERY sweet, and also rather chewy. Most people who don't like fondant have only tried the bad tasting brands, or they simply don't like the texture, or don't like how sweet it is. To accommodate both the visual design, and taste preferences, I always use a generous layer of [regular frosting] under fondant so those who don't enjoy eating it, can simply peel it off, and still enjoy the rest of the cake."

I make my own MMF and it does taste good. Still most people will not eat it. It does end up making the cake too sweet. I myself don't eat it. I did make a recipe of chocolate fondant and I liked that one. It tasted like a tootsie roll. Unfortunately I cannot remember where I saw the recipe.
