I'm looking for flavors that work well with red velvet cake. I know that cream cheese works well but my cousin doesn't want cream cheese, she wants buttercream frosting. I'm looking for a filling or some type of simple syrup to keep the cake moist. I have to make this cake about 4 days before the event.
Also, is there some way to smooth the buttercream so that it looks like fondant?

Thank Ya'll for any suggestions!

you can paint the inside layers of the cake with some simple syrup, and then do a raspberry preserve filling. As far as the buttercream, do a simple vanilla buttercream, or even white chocolate is nice, and follow the viva paper towel trick for smoothing.

IMBC tastes really good on Red Velvet cake. You can get it fairly smooth with a bench scraper, but probably not "fondant" smooth.

Vanilla bean smbc, raspberry smbc, chocolate smbc, chocolate ganche, and believe it or not peanut butter goes really nice with red velvet is you use cocoa powder in your red velvet recipe.

I always pair red velvet with a dark chocolate bc it really comes together well. I think white chocolate might taste good also.
