Heya,
I've only started making cakes since July, and have really enjoyed doing them, and hoped in the future, after I've gained more experience, I could actually do this for a living.
Tonight I'm questioning myself. I don't actually think I've got what it takes at all.
This week I've had to make 4 cakes for a xmas fayre, and each one has been a complete disaster. Wonky cakes, uneven cakes, cakes with horrible air bubbles in under the fondant.
I know I am my own worst critic, but today after doing them, i felt like crying. I know I could of done better, but Ive really had a bad run. I cant understand where I went wrong with every one. I used a different fondant on 3 of them, but thats all i did differently.
I thought cake making was my thing i was good at, turns out im good at nothing lol.
Maybe I should save myself some time and money by not bothering

Don't make decisions while upset. I've looked at your gallery and you do nice work. Give yourself a break. Everyone has a tough run now and again.

Have a glass of wine, a good nights sleep....even take a week or two off caking. Then think again.

I say follow the advice on Karateka'a subline (under her comment): "Fall 7 times...get up 8". I like that! If it's something you love to do, don't give up just yet. Maybe you overbooked yourself with 4 cakes in one week so you couldn't focus on the task at hand. I do that sometimes and when I'm not focused and feeling rushed, the result is often a cake I'm not happy with. Keep on keepin' on! Get up that 8th time! And then again a 9th, 10th, etc. Whatever it takes!

Don't give up. I feel the same way after almost every cake I make, but the people I make them for seem to really like them. My guess is tha the recipients of your cakes love them. I also think we see our own mistakes that no one else notices!

Oh honey don't give up! You have a LOT of potential and a LOT of talent!! We all hit a rough patch from time to time, that's called life. As long as you enjoy it, push through the rough times and you'll enjoy it even more when a cake turns out even more fabulous than you imagined! We've all been there!!!

I felt the same way last week. I had so many problems with one cake, I felt like chunking it in the trash, and the cake was for my family for Thanksgiving. I drove it from Texas to Alabama, it survived, thank goodness. But my family loved it and saw nothing wrong with my cake. I told them I was done with caking and they had a fit with me. They brought my confidence back up.

We are our worst critics as you said before. Hang in there. I bet in no time you will be looking forward to making another cake and love every minute of it.

Thanks guys, i just feel pretty down about it. They were taken to a xmas fayre today, i couldnt face taking them so my other half had to. I cant see anyone wanting to buy them, or win one in a raffle!

Yes, as everyone else has said- keep going! It's all about trial and error with baking/cake decorating and it's more error than anything! If you enjoy it, then there's no reason to quit. And for every success, your confidence will grow. Continue to use this website, tutorials and practice, practice, practice.. all of these will help you to develop your skills over time. Plus,people who don't cake decorate are impressed by pretty simple things. And, it's true, you are your worst critic- go easy on yourself!~
