I've been asked if I can make rainbow cake for a 50s/60s themed party. I've researched it and know that it involves dolloping different coloured cake batters on top of eachother in the cake pan, but I'm just wondering if, traditionally, it's meant to have a certain flavour or filling etc, or is it just a standard but colourful vanilla sponge with buttercream? If anyone knows anything about this I'd really be grateful of your advice.
Thanks![code:1:67abfdd6c1][/code:1:67abfdd6c1]

I think it can be any white or yellow cake mix or recipe. I've made one using a box of vanilla cake mix.

When i did it i used i think a vanilla or white cake. I seperated out into 5 - 7 different bowls and then colored and spooned into the pans. It came out beautiful! I did a oreo cream filling because it was for a kids bday.

I've done this a few times, it's fairly simple but time consuming plus it uses up loads of bowls! You just put equal measures of cake (I use sponge, white, pound) into different bowls, colour them the different colours and then pour your first colour into the middle of the pan, your next one directly on top of that and so on until you have finished all your batter. It should spread like a rainbow, it's really pretty.

I just used white cake that I colored. But I baked each layer separately. It was really pretty.

I also baked each layer seperately it gave a rainbow effect, where I think the other method has more of a tye dyed effect.

You're asking about what filling to use, right? Well you should color white or vanilla cake. The taste shouldn't be affected by coloring it so you can use a filling that goes with white or vanilla. Practically anything goes with white or vanilla cake!
