Would someone mind pointing me in the right direction of the order to do this....I want to make 7 balloons.. basically 7 oval fondant cut outs.. place them on floral wire and then make curly fondant ribbon coming down from the ballons to the cake... Make sense??

I have never tried anything with floral wire sticking out of a cake... any advice on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated!!

Like are the cut outs dry or wet when you put them on? Is it easier to make them double sided with the wire in the middle of the two cut outs? What will hold them on the wire without ripping the fondant? Do you put the wire in the cake first and then put the fondant on or vice versa? I have 18 gauge wire is that sufficient or should I use lollipop sticks?

yeah, I am really that clueless!!! icon_wink.gif TIA!!!!!!

Hi Scoobam!
Well, I was hoping to see what kind of responses you got from this, cause I have to do the same technique/s but I am making wings, not balloons. I guess I am just going to have to dive in and do one of each method. I made some palm trees out of fondant and attached floral wire underneath. I let the fondant dry and 'glued' the floral wire underneath and let that dry. The only problem with that was I made a big mess with the 'glue' but it was on the underside of the leaves so you couldn't see it. Ha ha I don't think you want that, and I don't either with my wings. icon_smile.gif I used 22 gauge wire covered in floral tape. This held up well. I don't know if 18 gauge is thicker or thinner, but I did read somewhere that 24 gauge wouldn't work.

I was going to add the sticks/wire before it dried this time. But I am not sure how well that is going to work.

You were concerned about the fondant breaking through the wire, well my concern is the wire or lollipop sticks breaking through the cake. If the fondant is too heavy will the wire or sticks start leaning/falling and eventually 'slice' through? That is what I am scared of. I had no problem with the wire on my palm trees breaking through the fondant.
If you look at my photos, the palm tree cake with the little boy, you can see the underside of the palm leaf and maybe see the mess I made. LOL You couldn't see that just looking at the cak in person, I think it was the angle I took the picture at.

I know this wasn't the help you were seeking, but maybe it helped a little bit.

Good luck!!!

18 guage should be suffiecent. I would cut 2 pieces out for each balloon , stick them back to back with the wire sandwiched in between. cut them as thin as you can. Dry flat and make sure pieces are completely dry before assembling. I would be tempted to use gumpaste for this. It dries much quicker than fondant and can be rolled much thinner which would cut down on the weight

Miss Baritone,
My wings are not that thin, but I see the wire through them. So far I have made two sets, one with the wire, and one without. This is sooo hard!!! I am cursing these wings. Good luck scoobam!!! I hope you find it easier than me!!!

Scoobam,
You mean you haven't started yet? LOL Just kidding!

I made 4 sets of small wings (only need 1 set) and 2 sets of big wings(only need 1 set of those too). They seem to be drying nicely. I ended up wrapping 2 wires (22 gauge) together for each and it so far seems to hold them when I pick them up. So hopefully by Saturday they will be good to go.

I hope your balloons turn out great!! Miss Baritone had a good suggestion and it worked!!! I am just hoping they are secure enough to "stand on their own". ha ha

Thanks Miss Baritone! And Good Luck Scoobam!! You post pics too!!!
