I am trying to make Gumpaste figurines (llamas) and I am keeping the unused portion covered, but the portion that I am working with drys so quickly. Can anyone give me any suggestions and how to keep it from drying while I am working with it??

I usually use mix fondant with the gumpaste about 50/50. It really helps.

Yes, mix in some fondant. It will still dry hard enough to stand up but give you the extra time needed to make the figure.

Ok thanks. I have already colored the gumpaste, but I can just add in some white fondant and then add more coloring right?? It doesn't need to be exactly 50/50, does it??

No, It doesn't need to be EXACTLY 50%/50%.

I like using Fondant with tylose powder added. I have also used the 50/50 mix of gumpaste and fondant and it works well also. I would also suggest putting just a very small amount of Crisco on the palms of your hands when working with the figures.

I don't make a lot of figures with fondant or gumpaste. When I used fondant, my figures seemed so fat and plumpy, so I thought I would try gumpaste, since I read it is like working wth clay and I do well with clay. I will try the Crisco. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have always used fondant with gum tragacanth powder mixed in for figurines (about 1tsp gum trag. per 500g fondant), which works really well for me. Just lately though, I've been using that mixture, but with about one third modelling chocolate added into it - I'm finding that even better to work with.

you can also knead in a little crisco into the gumpaste.

When I did the sun and mom in my pics I needed a little working time to form the face. After I got the basic shape I was going for I coated it in a light coat of crisco. This allowed me more time to work on it, since it kept the air off the fondant/gumpaste.
