Can I Use A Cookie Press To Create Fondant Ropes?

Has anyone ever tried using fondant in their cookie press to create long ropes? I would like to have an extruder but really don't want to spend the money on it since I just do cakes for friends and family.
I too wondered this, so I gave it a try the other day.
It does work but it is a bit tricky. I found putting the fondant in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it, and greasing the the inside of the press helped.
I use my old Wilton cookie press that looks like a caulking gun to extrude fondant ropes when the size of my discs for my clay extruder isn't correct. To get the fondant or gumpaste or 50/50 mix of fondant/gum paste, I just knead in shortening into the pieces I'm working with. It kind of feels slippery after kneading in. Then I just put it in the cookie press and have at it. Most of the time the cookie press work a whole lot easier than my clay extruder that is solely used for my cakes. HTH
This such a great idea. Someone gave me a cookie press that I NEVER use but I refuse to throw away. Thanks for giving it a funciton
Sillywabbit - I have to laugh!!! I have a brand new cookie press that I have had for years and never used -- but couldn't bring myself to throw it out. I can't wait to give this a try!
Thanks for the great suggestions everyone!
