Aloha from Hawaii! My first post...
I'm trying to make football helmet cake pops. The face mask will be small (I'm having trouble finding something to mold it around). Should I be making the face mask with fondant or with gumpaste? I figure since it will be hanging in mid-air, only connected on the two ends, it has to be something that can be suspended without drooping.
Thanks in advance!
What a clever idea! I think you'd definitely need to use gumpaste. Could you maybe find some styrofoam balls the right size at the craft store to mold these things around? You need to get them good and hard before you put them on the cake balls so you won't have the sagging problem you mention. And then attach them with melted chocolate (or, of course, attach them while the chocolate covering of the cake balls itself is still soft - duh!). This sounds like a terrific idea to me (and I'm not even a sports fan - just a fanatic about cute cake balls).
I'd use melted chocolate for the face masks. You don't really need something spherical as a mold, just something curved, like a little jar of paste color. Tape some waxed paper to the jar first.
