Hope this is clear:

In a few weeks, I'm doing this MS cake as a gift.

http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/recipe/chocolate-cherry-stout-cake?backto=true&backtourl=/photogallery/modern-wedding-cakes#slide_1

Two questions after rereading the recipe:
1) How many servings - really? The recipe is silent on this. It should be a very dense cake, one layer cake. Do I figure the same amount (38 servings) as if it were a regular 2 layer cake?
2)According to the recipe this makes enough batter for one 14" round or two 10" rounds. Great... except the math is not working for me. I should need 8 cups of batter for a 3" x 10" round, right? How can this recipe create 16 cups of batter?

Maybe the answers are really obvious and it is my lack of sleep that prevents my understanding... any feedback would be appreciated. Any actual answers would be ADORED!
I kind of hate to experiment with this since the ingredient list is quite pricey.
Thank you!

Maybe it's a 2in not 3. Just a guess.
