Ok, everyone, help needed. Attached is a picture of a wedding cake. My duaghter wants something similar to this, but with a Christmas theme. Looks like the draping covers the whole cake. If so, should I cover the layers with fondant first or just leave it butteream? I am going to use Satin Ice Ivory(can't see me trying to tint several batches of fondat to be the same). To drape correctly, how thick should I roll the fondant for draping? Am I correct tn that each layer is really separate drapes make to look as one? If I cover the cakes with fondat first using Satin Ice how thick should I roll that? I hear different stories on how thick to make the buttercream underneath and how thick to roll the fondant. I am going to use poinsettias, Christmas roses and holly for the decorations and use the Cake-Stackers system to put it together. When I cut the rectangles to make the drapes, how do I know the measurements to cut the pieces in order to get the look she wants? Got a year to practice on dummies(including me) to get it right! Thanks for any and all advice.

Give us the URL of where the picture can be found. I think this site has a problem with attaching pix from other sites.

I put the photo into the "my photo" file. Contacted tech support and there are issues being worked on. Titled "Kim's Wedding Wishes". She sent me a scan photo of the cake-I have not been able to find it online but it had Melinda Red Rose written underneath. Will keep trying to attach photo. If you click on my name to the left it should take you to my profile and on bottom right are my photos-I hope! Thanks so much for helping me!

hi thats a beautiful cake

since u have some time to practice i would try doing on buttercream first since it seems to be draped all over. I recently made a draped cake but it was not all over so i did cover w fondant first,

the bottom layer of fondant was not too thin since it kept breaking up on me. the drapes however i did do a bit thinner mine were rectangles 6 x 14 but for yours i would probably make them about 8 x 14 but gather them across the length instead of the width for the fan looking pieces going down and about 6 x 10 gather across the width for the drapes going length way on the tiers to be joined at the top of the fans the flowers u use will cover the seams well and any mistakes can be covered that way as well.

also from my mistake on my cake .... work your drapes from the bottom up since then u make the whole thing look as if the drapes are cascading from the top.

oh the thickness i rolled my drapes thinly to about 1/8 since i wanted the edges to be curly and frilly ... roll them as this as u can manage them ..... i was trying for much thinner since i wanted an almost transparent effect... chiffon like....whenever i tried the actual draping it kept tearing on me since it was so thin but after a few tries it worked out. fondant is forgiveable in that sense....

any way thats my take on things ... tell us how ur first try works out ....

Whenever I do draping I make sure the fondant is rolled thin. I gather it up in my hands like an accordian. You can also use skewer's to make the pleats. Add tylose to make the fondant dry faster and it will help. Also, you might get in trouble with the mod's here for posting a picture in your file of a cake that you didnt do. Just to let you know!!
