yeah, that was my day yesterday. my hubbys cousin got married yesterday and of course i was doing the wedd and grooms cakes ( oh and my hubby decided to go off and play in th woods ..ie hunting....instead of going to the wedd with me) sio thing are not working welll, cake crackage, little things that can be fixed, wedding cake is pretty well done, well up to the point of putting the ribbons, jewel emelishments etc on it which i like to do on site. so i sit it unstcked in the cooler and wor on finishing the grooms cake,

after several hours grooms cake is done, i am moving it to my picture table to snap some photos, i have no idea how that splotch of butter cream got on the floor, well i do i just dont remember doing it or i would have cleaned it up, me and cake go sliding and i dropped the cake when i reached out to grab the counter to keep ME from hitting the floor.

so its 1 1/2 hours before time for me to be on the road (wedding is 1 hour away plus i needed set up time) so i stack the wedding cake to realize i am out of long dowels for the center.

so i put it in the cooler stacked up, and run to the store to get dowels, go home shower and get dressed and stop by the grocery store to get choc. cupcakes to replace the grooms cake with.

i get to my shop grab my travel box with all the ribbons, wheel the cake to the car and put it in on its non slip mat, okay leaving town almost 1/2 hour late but its okay.

i hit the road get on the interstae feeling stressed but ok becasue when i m finsihed this wedd cake is gonna rock. okay 35 minutes into my drive on the intersate a car pulls in front of me and slams their brake so i had o slam mine, then it hit me right about the time i lightly rearended them and i was rearendd by the car behind me, the center dowels were still sitting in the front seat beside me

so i knew what that stromg waft of raspberry and butter cream meant, i immediately burst into tears, ( did i mention i am an emotional trainwreck right now, early menopause), anyways didnt have to call the police becasue well, one of the cars just behind us is a state trooper, so he pulls up and sees no damge really to the cars becasue we all just tapped each other, no one was hurt, he asked if any onewanted to file a report , no one did ( i asked if filling a report would mean insurance would pay fo the cake, he laughed and said no), so i said just get me out o fhere quick, he thought it was funny i was crying over cake, ( i wanted to punch him) anyways, so by this time it is almost 4 i am suppose to be at site at 430 wedd starts at 6, i get off the interstae to find smewhere to buy sheets cakes, while calling every bakery around to try and find a display cake just to find they were closed, called the cateres for the wedding but no answer, so i go to sams, they dont have any plain sheet cakes, only bright colored ones, okay thats not gonna work so i get all turned around trying to get back on the interstate the right direction, i am in sherwood trying to get back on heading toward little rock when i get pulled over, i thought i was being pulled over becasue i was on the phone with SIL trying to find out where the next closet grocery store is, he come to my window i am bawling and i tell him what happenend,

he was pulling me over for expired tags, not being on the phone
at this point i am thinking death to my hunny for not taking care of that and for going off into the woods and not being here, if he had been driving it woldnt have happend ( you know nautural wife reaction, blame it on hubby). so he gives me a warning and lets me follow him out and to a krogers, where i bought 6 plain white iced 1/4 sheets and a large choc cake ( just cause it was covered in choc shavings and looked good)

i didnt have the numbers for bride or her mom or anyone, becasue well all those numbers are in my hubbys phone because it is his family.

at 530 iam finally making my way to the venue ( those in the ar area, albert pike hotel) and the bride calls just as i am pulling up hey where are you, i tell her i am pulling up i had a littel car accident.

i pull up and he uncle and grandmother ( who is actually the one who paid for the caes, but at like a 50% discount already) , her uncle just gives me a hug ( mind you i havent seen him in 8 years, but it was still nice) her grand ma , mom, grandpa and ( her grandma is my FIL sister) and my FIl brother and his wife are all around my car surveying the damage, all are really nice and were saying at least you are ok thats all the matters ( which actaully made me feel worse they were being so nice about it) then went on to say i didnt have toget all the sheets cakes and i told them yeah i did if hey told the guest there was no cake at all there would be mutiny ahead, anyways so sorry so long and so much detail just a really bad experience all over, now i have to go clean all the cake out of the back of my car, even though all the brides family ( my hubbys family ) were literally eating the smooshed cake right out if the back end of my car when i got there

There's really nothing I can say to this horrible, sad story. icon_sad.gif I am just happy that you are safe and the recipients of the cake were so understanding. Hard to believe, but it could have been a LOT worse! I am so sorry for your troubles.

We all hear these horror stories of brides and their family flipping out over a minor or just imaginary cake snafu - these folks cared about you first! That is sweet. Sorry to hear of an awful stressful horrid day, but... Congratulations on being part of a truly loving family (and isn't that what wedding are really supposed to be about?).....and, yes, your hubby can clean the car.

I LOVE your husband's family! Sooner or later, we all get caught in the cross fire of the angry cake gods. Fortunately, they only killed your cakes and not you. It's days like yours that make me roll my eyes when non bakers say we have such a fun life.

yes i am very thankful that the cake was damaged and not me ( the same sentiment my hubbys family had) they really are a great family, if it was his moms side of the family it might have been a whole other story icon_biggrin.gif ........but they are fine with it, i think we are gonna do up a display cake and do some pictures so they have cake pics in their album but just skip the pciture of the "cutting" and go to the feeding each other since they did get that picture with the sheet cakes, we decorated a sheet cake for the table and it looked pretty but it was still a sheet cake, the brides grandmother ( my FIL sister) just kept saying we are just glad Natalies mom ( that's my 6 yo daughter) is okay, everyone can just eat more regular food ( this was before she realized i had ran all over to get sheet cakes) so its all good, but still has me down, which is why i am going to ihop for breakfast and going to get my daughter from my parents and take her to the zoo!

My family would have gathered around the back of the car and served the cake, later proclaiming it to be the most memorable wedding cake.

You have a great family. I hope they took pictures for the wedding album.

Uhm, I'm so sorry this happened to you. However....you should totally submit this story to cake safe dot com. They're looking for stories like this. You will totally win a new cake safe!

I'm sorry you had a horrible day, but I'm sooo happy it had a good ending. I hope since the officer was nice enough to get you to the store, he/she was also nice enough not to give you a ticket for the tag.

Oh dear...bless your heart. This brought up all kinds of memories from a month ago. My wedding caketastrophe picture and story is in my photo gallery. But I will say this...YOU have the worst story! I do know how you feel...and you were so right to replace it as best you could...you're so lucky to have been able to find something! Go get a cool drink and take a warm bath and relax. It's all over now and you survived to bake another day! Big virtual hugs!! You did great! thumbs_up.gif

louann, I think your story is everyone's worst nightmare of what they hope never happens to them....at least you had a family there that was more concerned about you then the cake that didn't make it. that is the awesome part and I think your idea of going to hubby's shop to clean out your car with his vac. is great. He may be a nice guy ordinarily, but to me seems or comes across as very unfeeling to have totally missed his family's wedding, not been there for you, not replace the tags like he should have, and not been very caring about the mess you had to clean. He, to me, seems like a total jerk!!! Does anyone else agree? I am glad that you came out of the whole thing w/o getting hurt to add insult to injury. Ok, we will all hope that this is the worst experience you ever have to have and now that it is over it has to get better from here out. God Bless.

Well, I almost feel better, sorry, after reading your story. This weekend I had 2 huge cake orders (huge for me being at home and just doing this for *fun* after my 40 hr week real job) One was a 3 tier dummy castle cake, and a pillow cake both with gumpaste tiara(i was about to give up cake just because of those) and another cake was a 3 tier all buttercream cheetah & zebra print with these silver electic guitars on the 2nd tier-stars coming out the top and a microphone smash cake(yes this was for a 1 year old rock star icon_smile.gif but I delivered my castle and pillow-great, then I went home, boxed up the other cakes and started to deliver those to another town-not even a block away, going up a hill I hear that horrible noise. I looked back at my daughter and said-tell me no it wasn't the cake, and she said oh yes it was. I pull over get out go to the back and look and tears start to fall. I go back home and have to call the lady*whose been so excited to see the cake* and tell her. She asked if I could fix it and I said no, well then I said yes, but it won't be pretty-she could still have it if she wanted. She still offered to pay something for it because I worked so hard on it, and I said no-but with my daughters help(she took a wilton class 1-3 last year with me & she's 14) my daughter did awsome at fixing tier 2, I fixed tier 1 and refixed the supports (center one broke!!!!) The dad or BIL picked up the cake, so I'm not sure what the mom thought-she hasn't told me. He still gave me $20, which nowhere near covered my cost-but I still wasn't expecting that kindness after ruinng the cake. I also had less than 2 hours by the time the cake disaster happened, that I had to have food made and delivered for a friend of mines wine tasting at her shop. Talk about stressed and emmotional-I could have drank a whole bottle of wine at the end of the day and not even thought twice about it-but I didn't. I just was hoping this would never happen to me-but to get thru the day I kept telling myself *at least it wasn't a wedding cake*. So I feel your pain! I really do, and deffinately leave the cake in the vaccum! Normally I have someone ride with me to drive and I hold the cake (just wrapped not in a box) but this one was big, I had far to drive and my husband had left-so no driver, and I didn't trust my daughter holding it. icon_sad.gif
