How Can So Much Go Wrong With Just One Cake?!?!

So I have a two tiered fondant covered wedding cake that is due in 11 hours. Everything that COULD go wrong HAS gone wrong.

Every trip to the store has been ridiculous - they keep running out of stock on the items I need. Re-baked a collapsed cake. Had to throw away my first batch of filling. Then 2nd filling was too runny and I had to take it apart and re-fill with a new batch. I have peeled fondant off of EACH layer and stripped it down to the bare bones cake TWICE. Re-made frosting twice. Made a new batch of fondant. Nearly dropped the cake when trying to put a hole in the cardboard for support system, and put a finger hole through the fondant on the FOURTH attempt at covering fondant on a simple 8" tier.
I won't even go on to name all of the "little" things. This has never happened to me before! I am exhausted, stilll have to cover the base cake in BC and Fondant, then lots of piping and Cricut Cutouts ... and somewhere in there I have to sleep!! Where did my knack go?? WHO STOLE IT!! Have I lost my cake-nicity? ARGH!!

We all have those days! They are yucky and make you want to not decorate for a long time...till you get a new idea! Hang in there, you'll get it. Those cakes are usually the ones that people love the most!

4buz....I feel your pain. I'm sitting here with a cake due at 3 pm today and facing the reality that I'm going to have to scrape off the BC and start all over again.

I've long ago concluded that there are cake gods...probably left over from ancient Greece. They sit upon Mount Fondant and rule the baker's world. Most of the time they are peaceful gods living in harmony and bestowing the gifts of clever ideas, creative design and precise craftsmanship. They inspire white chocolate cigarellos, fondant ruffle cakes, sugar paste roses of such delicacy that the light shines through the petals like fine bone china. In harmony and accord, the gods bestow SugarVeil mantilla lace and SPS infrastructure to support skyscraping cakes.

But once in a while the gods begin to bicker and throw down upon us discord, conflict and cake wrecks. Our cakes collapse regardless of how carefully we mix, or how faithful we are in wrapping magic stripes around our perfect pans and use heat cores on all our cakes 10" and greater.

Our bc which has always been airy and smooth, suddenly weight like cement on the sides of our cakes and slide off. Our fondant becomes elephant hides and our cake boards buckle.

We are at the cake gods mercy. And all we can do until they stop bombarding us with strife and trouble and return to peace and harmony is to take a deep breath, commiserate with one another on CC (another gift from the gods) and sit back with a glass of the nectar of those same gods ....taking comfort in the knowledge that this too shall pass.

Thank you so much for all of your words of encouragement! That kept me going until 4 a.m. that morning ... when the buttercream and fondant finally stuck and I knew that a fresh slate would be waiting after I could get some sleep.

Posted the picture of the cake ... the bride's family loved it. I never met the bride and did not get to see her reaction, I hope it met her expectations.

It's a nerve wracking feeling to put all of yourself into making something as "perfect" as possible and then never know their true feelings about the result! Is no news good news? Thanks again icon_smile.gif
