Hi

I just wondered if anyone uses brooches to decorate wedding cakes? I have not used any before but have a request for one. Probably a silly question but do you attach it to the ribbon and then put the ribbon on the cake or do you attach the ribbon and stick the brooch into the cake. Any advice would be really appreciated and gratefully received.

Thanks and regards icon_smile.gificon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

I'm interested to see what others with experience will say. I plan to place a brooch on a cake as well. My thought was to somehow attach a toothpick or skewer to the brooch and stick it into the cake. If it's only attached to the ribbon, I would think it will make the ribbon slip down. I guess depending on the size/weight of the brooch.

I use a toothpick, but that's just me.

I did a wedding cake with a rather heavy rhinestone brooch that was to be centered on a bow -- the bow was made of gumpaste and I stuck the brooch on the center knot of the bow while the gumpaste was still soft, making a hole that would support the brooch once the gumpaste dried, then removed the brooch so that it wouldn't weigh down the gumpaste as it was drying. After the bow was dried and placed on the cake, I just used eggwhite to make the pin of the brooch sit tight in the hole. It worked and held up very well through transport and set up.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It's always great to learn what other people do. For this cake I will be using a satin ribbon and I was wondering if anyone else had used a brooch with a satin ribbon on a fondant covered cake.
