How Do I Get Cakes Published?

I am wondering how folks get their cakes published in various print magazines. I am a nobody in the cake world, so obviously no one is watching me. I also know that my cakes are done for the client and typically folks want fairly standard designs, so there is nothing amazing there. I do however, have some interesting designs coming up and several that I have been planning in my head. Do I submit pictures to magazines or is it something that I need to be asked to do? Anyone have any advice?
I have done two cakes for stylized photo shoots, and both of those shoots were published in blogs (Elizabeth Anne Designs and United with Love), but I really want to be in a physical magazine.
Start by submitting a couple of photos to your local newspaper. Most papers have a weekly food section. Then look at your small regional magazines. Once you've had published print photos you can query the larger magazines. And think about how your cakes are different from the bazillion cakes already in print. Get a different angle and shout repeatedly about how yours are different.
I contacted two local magazines (one bridal and one not), and they will only feature advertisers. The bridal one said the only way to "showcase" my cakes otherwise is to have a photographer submit a wedding for one of their "Real Wedding" features.
Most people submit their pictures to be published. If it is a cake magazine they should have details on how to submit your photos. If it is another mag contact them and see if they do something similar.
If you'd like to submit a photo of your cake to Cake Central Magazine, simply click on the link below, and follow the instructions for Photo Submissions.
