I purchased CK's Confectioner's Glaze and Thinner to put on small gumpaste/fondant items. Can someone tell me if confectioner's glaze is edible??
It's the secretion of the lac beetle. It does stink until dry and the fumes are kind of overpowering in a small space.
It's considered edible by the FDA and it's used as a coating on some candies...but they use less, usually, than what we would be able to accomplish at home. In the UK and Australia, if I recall correctly, it's not labeled as edible.
I use it on cake boards and other decorative pieces. When I want a shine on something edible, I use a mix of gum arabic and water, which is edible and makes cleanup easier. It will cause petal dust or paint to streak or run though, so you have to keep that in mind.
