tootsie rolls are wonderful! i made the "hotdog" of my cake out of a hand full of them. just took them out of the wrapper and put them in the microwave for 4 seconds to soften them and then shaped them

and the top of the cupcake are about 3 tootsie rolls flattened together

I never would have thought to use tootsie rolls until I saw a recipe for them a couple of weeks ago. It is the same recipe as for modeling chocolate! Go figure! Mommynana, your rose is really good!

bakencake, Your hotdog cake is great, And so is you`r cupcake, Never thought of doing that to the cupcake but sounds good, have to try it.

kmstreepey, Thank you, I never have any luck with modeling chocolate,
Everytime i make it. Its fine when i roll it, But when i try to spread it, It cracks around the edges.
So i tried tootsie rolls, And it worked out better. And i think cheaper.

You can also use Starburst, they come in all different colors and are super simple to work with.

Just unwrap, pop in the microwave for a few seconds and use like fondant.

Thats what ive done. Ill see if I can find pics, i had a major computer issue and lost a lot of pics icon_cry.gif

You can make much more than flowers too, ive made teddy bears, turtles, fruit.....really, you can make anything you can think of.

Also, you can use gumdrops. They're a bit finicky, but they work well. Roll them flat , use extra granulated sugar if needed. Ive only made flowers with gumdrops because I found they dont 'shape' well.
Meaning they 'bend' easily to make petals on a flower, but do not shape well for.....a bears limbs for example.

I hope this helps someone!

Once you shape your tootsie roll/Starburst/gum drop, does it harden to the point someone wouldn't want to eat it (like royal icing flowers) or do they stay somewhat soft enough to actually eat? It's an awesome idea I never thought of incorporating on a cake! Plus, modelling chocolate intimidates me!
