Crisp Cookie / Soggy Cookie

I would really like to spend more time doing cookies, but I always end up disappointed with the texture of the finished cookie. My nice firm / crisp cookie seems to absorb the moisure from the icing and the texture changes. It is not like a soft cakey cookie, it is almost rubbery/ chewy. (This happens no matter what icing I use, glaze, royal or fondant. )

Is this just the way it is with decorated cookies, or am I missing something?

Thanks a bunch,

Hazel
