LOL! I have to admit I am getting tired of all the requests for zebra stripes. I hand cut mine from black fondant. Does anyone know if you can buy a set of cutters in various sizes of zebra stripes? Sure would make it easier!!

You may already know this, but have you tried using a pizza cutter? When I need a lot of zebra strips, I roll out a flat piece of fondant, then slice it up all crazy like with the pizza cutter, then, I just peal off the "stripes" that I like. Its a good quick way to get a bunch of different sizes of thin stripes.

I just got two requests, both with hot pink! What is it with zebra stripes? We're they featured on some cake show or something?

give us zebra any day we havent got one requests yet, I guess most here in the islands are traditionalists and wont venture to far out. It would freak everyone here. But Iam hoping we can add one zebra to our portfolio.

The second you buy a set of cutters, no one will ask for zebra stripes! Murphy's Law!
Darn Murphy...(I cut mine by hand too)!

I just got my first request for the hot pink with zebra stripes. I can see how the design can become a favorite of girls trying to do something 'unique' and 'original'.... icon_wink.gif

i was thinking the same thing!!! I use a pizza cutter for a lot of things. cutting up pancakes/waffles for the kiddos. I also use it to cut massive amounts of crisciki cookies for my family during the holidays. greatest invention ever! icon_wink.gif

Thanks everyone! Glad to hear I'm not alone in the hot pink and zebra stripe world!! I will have to try a pizza cutter. We also use them for pancakes, waffles, and even spaghetti!

On Yummyarts.com, Tami Utley did a zebra stripe, leopard print and camel by painting on with gel color and vodka mixed together, but she did say that there were stencils made with those animals' markings. I like the zebra and hot pink, myself and so does my daughter. I know that it would get old if that is all you had been getting orders for though. I would feel that way about anything I think after a while. although I would expect myself to have come up with an efficient way to do it by the time I had done a few and also would expect that my later cakes would be greatly improved on my first ones. I recently did a zebra stripe for a girl who liked purple and green. I did hot purple and hot green(neon) and she loved it. She didn't request the zebra stripes, I just wanted to improve on the last one I did which was some time ago and I really am not sure that I did. It was a going away cake.

I use a pizza cutter and when I cut them, I cut in the shape of a very narrow triangle, away from me, and try to make a triangle in the opposite direction towards me. I"m cutting 2 stripes at almost the same time. I do it with a whole strip of fondant about 12 inches X 5 inches.

It goes by very quickly.

HTH

I do not understand this CakeCentral thing. I found out about YummyArts.com on Cake central here. Now they blocked the name from my response. If they don't want people finding out about YummyArts.com why did they advertise for it?

I must say I HATE (well perhaps hate is too strong a word) but I sure dislike doing zebra cakes and I've had a whole summer of them while every 13 year old girl insists on it for her birthday party. I've been stuck with neon green and zebra. Makes me want to puke especially when I see such other very pretty cakes pictured here. I use the pizza cutter to make short work of the zebra.

If I thought the purchase of a specific cutter would stop this craze I would be the first in line to buy it. Ane where did this craze start anyway??? was there some Disney connection??? did the latest pre teen idol (soon to be pole dancing crack smoker) have one featured in the birthday coverage in Tiger Beat?

OK...I'm finished venting.

Haha! I love your vent. Last week I had a request for camo/army guy cup cakes. The mom apologized for ordering something she thought was boring and ugly and I laughed. I said I LOVED doing the camo/army guy cup Ames because it was something other than hot pink and zebra stripe!

I love doing zebra stripe since it looks cute and takes no time at all. i wouldn't buy a cutter since it would take more time that rolling out a thin strip on on the pasta machine and cutting with a pastry cutter.

I've done quite a few myself lately. I find it more challenging that the rest of you because I frost and decorate only with pastry pride. In case you don't know, whipped cream and fondant are not friends! The fondant becomes sticky, drippy and gooey. That being said, has anyone tried the Wilton Sugar Sheets in black? O.M.G. This makes the stripes sooo easy to make! No rolling fondant or gumpaste! Just buy a sheet for 3.99 and you can cut it with regular scissors. And you get a lot of stripes from 1 sheet with no waste. I use them religiously for anything that's calls for stripes!

I'm actually doing a lime green with zebra stripes now for this weekend. icon_smile.gif

I saw Buddy do zebra stripes one time (pretty sure he had a pizza cutter?) He was done with them in seconds. I mean, if you think about it, you don't have to be extremely precise anyway. Just go to town on some rolled out fondant and make a point on the end.

My little town is all conservative too. People just want sheet cakes! Boring! I'd love something hot pink and black, like a wedding cake.... doesn't have to be zebra striped.

Everyone loves when I make something neat and out of the box (for this area), it's just that nobody requests it.

Most likely due to the fact that they can get a sheet cake for 20 bucks that feeds 15 icon_smile.gif Same for this area I live in as well, lol.
