I bought a cricut cake machine several months ago and just pulled it out of the box to try and figure out how to use it before I attempt to make a cake for my sons 18th bday. I also bought some wilton sugar sheets....what is the best way to use them in the machine? I plan on making cakes a day or so before and placing in frig. So if I use buttercream icing....should I apply sugar sheets directly after icing the cake or wait til the day of party and icing has settled.

Another question....I want to try and make a topsy turvy cake...should a place a cake board under each topsy section of a 3 tiered cake or just use dowel rods to hold them in place.

Sorry for so many questions...but this is all new to me. I usually just bake a regular cake or buy some expensive one from the cake store. I want to start making my own cool cakes....thanks so much for your help!

I don't know much about the circuit stuff, but I do recall reading that the sheets have been effected (or is it affected?? I never get that right) by the grease in the buttercream- I would think you would have to wait as long as possible- again just what I read- I apologize if it is misleading.

As for the Topsy-Turvy cake- yes, you must use cake circles under each tier as well as dowel support.

Good luck

I use frosting sheets with my cricut and have had the best luck cutting the ones from icingimages. They stick to the backing much better then the rest of the brands. I trim the sheet back a little from the edge so I can tape the backing to the cricut mat to keep it from moving around and it cuts perfectly. I never refrigerate cakes with frosting sheets on them. If nothing is perishable there is no need to refrigerate.

You will need supports and boards for each tier or they will collapse into each other.

I just finished cutting both homemade gumpaste and Wilton Sugar Sheets today.

My gumpaste I rolled very thin, then left out to dry for 20-30 minutes or so. They were a bit dry-ish on top, but the scraps still kneaded up and could be rerolled. I cut the castle and princess from the Birthday Cakes cartridge at 5" and 4.5". I also cut a scalloped oval at 1.75, and a fancy O at 1.25 from other cartridges.

Then I pulled out my Sugar Sheet to cut lettering. I finally found that putting shortening on BOTH the mat and the back of the sugar held the best. I was able to cut .5" lettering from the Birthday Cakes cartridge easily, once I found how to adhere the SS to the mat. I did waste a bit fooling around, and it cannot be kneaded and rerolled like the gumpaste, but I had only cut off a 1" strip to start, then another when I got it all figured out. So only 2" used, the rest stored away.

I got my Cricut April 2010 when new, and have not used it like I wanted. I think these Sugar Sheets could change that! I have always wanted to do a damask cake, so will have to pick up a black sheet for that!

Lcubed82, buy your sheets from icingimages and save yourself some money. Wilton sheets are $4/ea and you can get 28 for $42 from icingimages making them $1.50/ea. Even with shipping you'll still save save money and you wont have to take them off the backing and mess with applying shortening to the mat and sheet.

Thanks for the info, tiggy2! I used coupons to buy two sheets to play. I will check out the icingimages for next time!

I have tried using my new Cricut machine and I want my money back! Nothing works threat you think it should. The frosting/icing sheets that came with the machine were dried out and cracked the second I placed them on the machine. icon_mad.gif

Cricut sheets are horrible. Try icingimages sheets if you can't return your machine.
