So it's been a year since my big screw up. I had a friend of mine suggest me to a couple that she knew for a wedding cake. They came over and picked out a design. I wrote everything down and they paid me for it. She brought me 2 pieces of fabric to match the frosting to. They ordered a tiered cake with a simple squiggle design all over it and fresh flowers in between each tier (which they would provide the day of the wedding). I made the cake, delivered it and set it all up. I thought it turned out GREAT. I took pictures and everyone I showed pics to LOVED it. Time passed on and I never heard from the bride or groom. I never got my plates or pillars back either (an expensive set). All of a sudden, 6 months after their wedding I got an email from the bride saying that she has my plates & pillars but she was NOT happy with the cake. Apparently, I messed up the colors. She had wanted a white background on the cake with green decoration. I made the background green with pink decoration. I could have sworn I was right but of course, my mistake, I had thrown out their order papers and really had no proof. Just the 2 swatches of fabric that she gave me for color (one was green and the other was pink). I wondered why she would give me pink if there wasn't supposed to be any pink but ???

Anyways, would you have done anything to make it up to them? I feel bad if it was wrong but why did they wait so long to tell me? I haven't done a cake since just because of sheer terror of messing it up for someone. Ugh.

First, if you loan out equipment you need back, het a cash deposit with a time due back or they lose their deposit. Second, after 6 months and you have a pink swatch, I don't think I would give anything back. Something just doesn't sound right here. You can always ask her for her copies of the paperwork and see what it says, but I would need prof before I give a refund and after 6 months, I just don't know.

6 months? I'd say that the time for a refund has certainly passed, especially since they never gave you back your property.

If you genuinely enjoy cake decorating, please stop punishing yourself. Your green wedding cake is delightful. You are not a failure....OMG you are hard on yourself!!!!!! I don't know if any of us can say we have never made a mistake. I bet the wedding guests gobbled up your cake. When she returns your stuff appologize as nicely as you can and then LET IT GO.
I looked at your cakes and they are pretty darn nice. If she was really upset she would have called you on the day of the wedding and pitched a hissy fit. I know that's right just from reading this board. Time to "get back on the horse", you are too talented to let this bother you any longer.

I agree, you are being way too hard on urself. For one thing, that is ur equipment and she shouldnt be holding on to it just cause she didnt like her cake, which by the way is beautiful, especially letting you know 6 months down the road. If you really cant get over it maybe offer a 6in anniversary cake but i dont think that its ur fault. Hers for waiting soo long.

She complains 6 MONTHS later????

You owe her nothing. If you feel that you need to respond I would mention the time frame and tell her you wish she had gotten back to you about this in a timely fashion.

6 months later is laughable. I wouldn't give this another thought. She probably just found your plates in a box someplace and came up with this complaint to cover up her tardiness in returning them to you.

6 months is wayy too long. I admit, I am human. I have messed up on a couple of wedding cakes. And they are usually in touch with you the next day or the Monday following at the latest! If I can give you any advice, hang on to all of your paperwork. I make copies of what we talked about at our initial visit and give it to them to take. Then I do a contract and have it all spelled out for them and for me!! Especially me! LOL Is she asking for a refund? I would say no!

Live and Learn - now you will be sure to know the color's next time. I mispelled the name on a birthday cake one time! That was horrible and I almost quit making cakes - but I didn't and I am happy.
