I got married Nov. 2002. I REALLY didn't want a "cookie cutter" wedding, so we had a medieval one! It was a small wedding of 35 guests, (which all wore costumes as well.) I wore red!
I wrote our vows and incorporated medieval traditions in them.
Back a thousand years ago, they didn't have wedding cakes like today. They had piles of little cakes (more like a sweet biscuit with currents and such), so that is what we did.

My first wedding cake was made by a friend . It was a 2 tier square with horse shoes and paper flower things on the corners with some plastic and lace heart thing going on in the centre. I thought it was great at the time. By the time I remarried in 1998 I was making kiddie cakes but didn't have the confidence to make a wedding cake so I got a local decorator to make one. It was all fruit. They were probably going out of fashion by the time I got wed but I wanted and had garret frills. The decorator matched the bridesmaid dress colour with the dusting on the edge of the frills and on the ribbon exactly. I really couldn't afford a topperor flowers on top so My friend pulled apart a silk flower from the local department store and made a topper for me that cost about £ 4.50.
Image
When my son got married 4 yrs ago I made his cake. because I didn't have the skills I cheated on the flowers and topper by buying them but I am still fond of it.

Here are mine from 2005. It was a few years before I got into decorating. Each separate tier was a different cake flavor. The groom's cake had those delicious malt balls on top.

I let my mother handle the cake completely, except the cake topper. I chose it. She had a home-baker friend do it. The friend only charged my mom $200. I told my mother then, she got a steal. Now I know how much truth I was speaking!

What a fun thread!
I think these links should work even if you aren't on facebook...

My husband's sister in law made our cake, and I loved it...I just loved it. I honestly don't know what it cost, it was between my mother in law and sister in law, but I couldn't have been happier. It was chocolate and vanilla (different tiers) with raspberry filling and cooked flour frosting (my favorite).

I am not sure if I have a digital image of my wedding cake. It was simple. Iced in IMBC with some real shells on it. I was not really decorating back then, and even if I was... I would NEVER have wanted to bake my own cake. There's enough going on on your wedding day... I wouldn't want the added burden. I wanted to be partying the night before my wedding... not decorating a cake.. LOL.

OMG Thank you LittleMissBakesAlot! Remove the S!!! You are rad!

So OK, since my cake got posted after all, this was my 1st tiered cake, I did white with meyer lemon curd and cream cheese buttercream. I had never done anything like this before, I bought the pans, googled how to do the tiers and BAM. My own wedding cake.

And we loved it icon_biggrin.gif

This was the only decent picture I could find of my wedding cake. The cake looks kinda sad but it tasted amazing, I ordered it from a friend of a friend after a trip to a local bakery for a tasting went HORRIBLY wrong. The cake was white cake with Lemon curd and raspberry jam with vanilla buttercream. I hated my wedding dress. I wanted a black dress but everyone else insisted that I get a white dress and my Maid of honor actually paid for the dress and let us host our wedding at her house. I will be forever greatful to that woman. In september will be our 2 year wedding anniversary and my husband told me that when we get to our 10 year anniversary that we can renew our vows and I can have anything I want. I am thinking about doing my own wedding cake for that.

I also don't have any digital photos of my wedding... we got married in 1995.

I wasn't a cake decorator back then and really wasn't overly fussy... tastings were unheard of back then, too. So I took a photo of my friend's wedding cake, gave it to the caterer and said 'I'd like one like that, please'. It was 3 tiers, on a stand with one tier slightly in front of the other and the flowers sort of flowed from one tier to the other. I'm not describing it well!!! icon_cool.gif I *think* it had garret frills around the side - I honestly can't remember.

HOWEVER - the top tier was a fake. Not to save money or because we didn't need the cake... it contained a 'banner'. Long, long, long running family joke between two of my aunts. One lives in Canada, the other here in England. This banner has been backwards and forwards for years. My English Aunt persuaded me to hide the banner in the top tier of my cake, then present my Canadian Aunt with the top tier to take home to my uncle and cousins who hadn't been able to come over for my wedding. Oh, how bad did I feel when she was so moved that she was almost in tears? icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

AAhhhh, we didn't have a cake, because we didn't have a wedding!! Hubbie and I were dirt poor and both college students living at home. There was NO WAY I was asking my mother for any money for a wedding (Momzilla?? it would have been her wedding and maybe I could wear the dress, maybe not).

So, we laid away a set of rings. A whole $160. We got the license, then the blood tests at my GP, that was about $60. Then made an appointment with the local magistrate. Just us. He charged $10.

Any other weddings under $250?? Well. Needless to say when I finally told my mother she didn't speak to me for a month and his parents actually found out through the grapevine (large families tattle on each other) and the day before we were going to tell them they "sat us down and gave us a what for".

Things were rocky in the first year, but hey, that was 20 years ago this year!! Two kids later and things are still going strong. icon_smile.gif

Everyone else in his family that had the baby showers and bridal showers and big weddings, well, they are ALL divorced.

It's not the wedding, it's the marriage.

Tami icon_smile.gif

..............needless to say those rings don't fit either of us anymore...........

those are neat stories, thanks for writing.

I had a nice wedding(church) for my first time around. The second time the circumstances weren't necessarily what we would have preferred, but we got married down at the county courthouse and it was by a minister(not the justice of the peace) two friends of mine stood up for us and my parents came. My girlfriend that stood up for us bought along a sparkling grape juice to toast to us and then threw me a bridal shower later. We are hoping that maybe by our 10th that we could do a ceremony of renewal of vows. That is only 3 years away though. finances are still kind of tight. I not only want to make my own wedding cake, I want to make my own dress too. I have had a dress picked out for years. I am just hoping that I can get all my weight off by then. We want to have a nice ceremony and then a big party. The party will probably be outdoors at our place. We will have to do it a little earlier than the actual date so it will be pleasant and enjoyable for everyone. Again I loved reading your stories.

We had a Renaissance/Halloween wedding. (Bridal Party - Ren, Guests - Halloween costumes). My husband wore a sword (which was my wedding gift to him) that we used to cut the cake. It was Oct 1996 and we were an a pretty tight budget. I always dreamed as a little girl that a specific bakery in SF would make my cake but I just couldn't afford it then. (Victoria's Pastry Italian Bakery...still my favorite). Instead, we got a great deal and an equally fantastic bakery (Diandas). Two layers were Tiramisu and the other was Italian Rum. Fabulous!!! I wanted a castle to go with the theme wedding but theme cakes were not quite as big then as they are now....a castle cake was hard to find (pre-ineternet, pre-fondant). I was more concered about the quality and flavor of having a fine italian-type cake anyway so we got a plain white cake, decorated like any birthday cake, whipped cream roses and drapes. We did find a little blown glass castle for the top which is still in my china cabinet. Total cost $120.

We got married in 2006. My husband was retiring from the military so we tied our wedding in with his retirement. We had a friend who makes cakes make his retirement cake as well as our wedding cake. She said she was legal, but now that I'm into cakes I'm not so sure. Anyway, the bottom tier was supposed to be almond cake with chocolate buttercream filling for the masses, but ended up being chocolate cake and I'm not a fan unless its mine so imagine my surprise when I cut into that! The middle tier was white cake I think with dulce de leche filling. That was for me, but I didn't get any. The top tier was white cake I think with key lime filling. That was for my husband. My friend had never made dulce de leche or key lime before, but she did a great job. The tiers were squares and turned on each other. There were tealight candles on each corner and a castle on top. Very simple design, just the three-dot design. I have pictures, but they won't attach.

Here was my cake!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/38349_406369713151_502553151_4403766_4024218_n.jpg

I got married just last year in June (2010). The cake didn't turn out as great as I was originally expecting (based on what as discussed upon ordering) but it was good enough. It was from a bakery that was affiliated with the venue who seemingly had a great portfolio. Of course, I found out weeks later that all the pictures in their album were of other peoples' work. That pretty much explained why I didn't get what I originally expected (cleaner more precise corners, neater draping, etc.) It tasted alright but not only was the fondant about half an inch thick, but the cake also seemed to fall apart from the inside and my family ended up throwing most of it out the next day because it just wasn't edible. Cake apparently wasn't a big deal for the crowd as we had a dessert table lined with french pastries and petite fours, so most of the guests didn't even bother with cake.

Serves me right for paying just around $425 for it.. I knew the price was too good to be true! Lesson learned though. I could have made it on my own but my family thought I was half crazy for making my own engagement cake - wasn't gonna take the lunge for my wedding! They would've thought I was completely out of my mind if I did!!

IMHO the most important accessory needed at a wedding is teh beaming smiles of the bride and groom. The things I remembered most about my wedding were not the stupid little details that I stressed over like the damn pew bows which, I don't even remember seeing. The things I remember most vividly are the things that came free; the look on my husband's face when he saw me coming down the aisle, the little choke in his voice when he started his vows because he was filled with such emotion; and him trying to be all sweet and tender at the end of the night undoing my lace up dress in the bridal sweet (where we changed to head to the airport) and me telling him to HURRY because I had to PEEEEE soo bad because I refused to pee in my dress all day. HAHAHA

1982....I made my own wedding cake. From scratch . It was a 8,10,12,14 with the plastic columns between each tier. It was my first tiered cake. I put in the wooden dowels and it was perfectly level, however by the time we set it up, the cake had settled a little and a little bit of the wood dowels were showing on one layer. The church hostess were concerned and said they had never seen dowels,I was too nervous to mess with theM, so I guess I must have told them to take them out if it bothered them. They did, and yes you guesses it, there was a lean by the time we arrived at the reception...good photographer, you really can't tell, but I was angry, but 29 years later we are still happy and I ave learned a lot about stacking cakes...sps all the way.

I was married in 1965. The reception was at my parent's home. My mother and grandmother made my wedding cake. Three tiered (and I don't imagine they did all the super infrastructure like we do today!) The cake was vanilla with lemon buttercream filling and vanilla buttercream frosting (no Crisco there) (geeze, were we ever so WASP!) I can't recall what the topper was but I do know the cake had the ubiquitous swags and edging in buttercream.

I got married in 2004 but don't have any cake photos on this computer- I had a 3 tier circular cake, white with white roses, ivy and lavender cascading down one corner (they were the wedding flowers). I had the bottom layer fruit cake, middle layer vanilla sponge and top fruit cake again.

I was very pleased with it, however if I could go back in time I would have more 'gourmet' cake flavours as England is still very stuck in its ways i.e. lots of plain victoria sponge with jam and buttercream filling, and fruitcake. There's a whole world of gorgeous flavours out there!!!

The cake was made by the lady who did our catering BTW and I have no idea of the cost as MIL paid for it very kindly icon_smile.gif

I was married in 2004, way before I got into decorating cakes icon_smile.gif I had final tests at the university until the day before the wedding, we were married the same day as graduation icon_smile.gif I am celiac, so I gave my best gluten free chocolate cake recipe and ingredients to my sweet MIL who was so kind to bake the cakes for me. The local bakery of their small town decorated them for us. It's a really small town so they were a bit limited in the designs they could do and I didn't have time to go up and pick one, so my MIL picked a simple white design and we added some fresh flowers to it icon_smile.gif

I was just so excited to be able to have a wedding cake and eat it too! Everyone loved the cake and we got lots of compliments on how yummy it was, and even a few requests for the recipe, they were surprised to find out it was gluten free icon_lol.gif

Oh this is so fun! But I also feel so young. We were married in 2009. Our theme was super simple it reminded me of a country time lemonade commercial, at the time I wasn't doing cakes so I didn't know what I wanted like I said something simple, and something inexpensive so we had a friend do it. I loved it at the time and now that I look back have great ideas of what we could have done.

We were married in 2002. We had our reception at a reception hall, and they basically gave us three choices for what we wanted for our wedding cake. I had no thoughts on what I wanted, so I saw this, thought it looked pretty, and chose it. I'm still happy with it. =)

However, they gave us the top tier in a box and left the flowers in it. (Unknown to us) So not knowing that it should be put in the freezer right away, we put it in the fridge for two days. (We didn't have a honeymoon, but just took a week off of work.) So we decided to go ahead and eat it, cause neither of us cared about saving it for a year...(grossed us out a little). And when we went to get it out of the fridge, the flowers were rotting in the frosting and top part of the cake. Had to just throw it out. =(

So sad.

I was married in 2009, I had an interest in cake decorating but never done anything before. I was on a very tight budget so we had fairycakes that I frosted myself and topped with silver balls and flowers I purchased fom ebay. I didnt have time to decorate the top tier so decided to have matching flowers on top, I did say I wanted them paced on the top not on a pillar but hey ho thats what I got.
