I have been asked to make a black and hot pink swirled cake...I always start with chocolate when I make anything black, but the birthday boy can't have chocolate Has anybody ever made batter in euther of these colors? I'm worried about it being bitter. Thank you!
I honestly can't see a black cake batter that begins with anything other than chocolate. To turn white or yellow black would take so much color, I'd think it would have to be bitter. I'd tell them to pick another color.
As for the pink, that's no problem.

Deffinetly would be bitter I think. If you have time to expiriment you could try doing a blueberry or blackberry cake and then add your black from there? not sure if that would work, but it might be worth a try.
What if you check the lable to see if there is chocolate, if not, start with a boxed red velvet?
That sounds a lot like a Yoda response....sorry
I have nothing helpful to add but, they asked for a black and hot pink swirled cake for a birthday BOY? Funny!

Red velvet has cocoa powder (chocolate) in it.
