How Would You Do This?

I'll be making a cake in September similar to the one I've hopefully attached or linked to. The cake is by "Cut the Cake" in Longwood, FL. My cousin found a picture of it in a bridal magazine.

Can you tell me how you would do the square on the side of the cake? It will be iced with BC, and I'm planning to make the gray borders with fondant. I'm used to attaching fondant to fondant, but unsure how to attach this or what to make it out of.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

I would use Royal Icing. It will adhere the best.

I'd make it out of the same fondant you are using for the ribbon border.

I'd make a square out of the fondant you made the ribbon out of too. Then I'd make a smaller square out of white fondant for the monogram.

Thanks for your replies! That's what I was thinking... to make the squares out of fondant. I just have it in my head that it will just slide off the buttercream.
So, it should stick to the cake with royal icing? For some reason, it just doesn't make sense in my head.

I'd do the same. As to how to attach it, it can depend on the kind of buttercream you are using. Sometimes you can just "butter" the back of it with more buttercream and stick it on.

You might want to experiment with you buttercream to see how it does...

RachelMade, I had the same worry when I had to apply initials on a sugarpaste plaque to a buttercream cake. Someone suggested that I use a crustiing buttercream, let it set well, then put a smear of royal icing on the back of the plaque and apply to the buttercream. I had rolled the sugarpaste for the plaque really thin to minimize the weight.. It turned out great. Good luck. The cake is beautiful

doesn't buttercream and/or oil make royal icing "melt"? I've never had a problem just using buttercream to stick fondant to a cake

I just use additional buttercream to attach fondant plaques or lettering to the side of a bc cake also.

Just roll the plaque fairly thin and if you want you could add a bit of tylose or gp to the fondant so that the plaque will harden and hold it's shape.

I always brush a little gumpaste glue to the back of the fondant piece and apply to the buttercream. The tackiness adheres immediately! and doesn't add extra weight like BC or RI. This is the technique I use anytime I am applying fondant or gumpaste items to buttercream, and I have never had a problem

I use piping gel to attach fondant pieces to my buttercream. Works great for me.
