i am thinking of decorating and using some cakes dummies to build my portfolio. im wondering how to decorate over the styrofoam?. do place the fondant right on the surface, or do u royal ice first? any help would be appreciated, thanks
I have seen people take a pastry brush and brush on some water straight onto the Styrofoam and then cover with fondant. I have not tried it yet, but I will be doing so soon for an order I have coming up.
Also, make sure the fondant is a bit thicker than how you would normally cover a cake.
Hope it works out for you!!
I put a thin layer of icing first, as though I am dirty icing the cake. The dummies I have are styrofoam and the fondant would slide off without it.
I always keep a can of store bought frosting on hand to use for practicing on dummies, just a helpful tip.
I spread a really thin layer of buttercream on the styrofoam and then put on my fondant.
Good luck!
No icing is necessary on a dummy cake. Make sure you soften the edges first with sandpaper or you can rub the edges against the counter or a rolling pin.
You can spritz a bit of water on the dummy or rub some shortening on it.
