Black is one color I don't like mixing up... takes so much time and I not always achive the color I'm after.
I have a almost all black groom's cake due by the end of August and will like to hear opinions.
TIA
I'm sure I read somewhere if you start with brown or chocolate fondant it's easier to get a black fondant.

You are so right--there are some colors that are hard to achive!!!Whenever I have tried to mix my own black it is either more of a really dark grey or I have to use so much coloring gell it gets really sticky, so I am a big fan of buying premixed colors for both black and red (also a hard color for me to do). I personally like the Fonderific Buttercream flavor which comes in many colors, but I'm sure most of the brands carry premixed colors.
I have made black a few times, but in small quantities, and was able to get the right color. However, today I coloured and covered my first 10 inch wedding cake tier in black. I will NOT be doing that again. I eventually got the right colour (I started with making chocolate MMF), but the fondant ended up tearing alot. I was not that pleased with the end result. But luckily the tier will be covered with lots of white piping and it is only up close in certain light that you can see the cracking.
I always making MMF, and like working with it, but I think next time (like many people on here) I will just buy the black fondant if I have alot of cake to cover.
You might be able to buy black fondant online. I mixed some of the Wilton Black into some homemade marshmallow fondant and it took nearly the entire little container. I also used lots of CRISCO on my hands to keep it smooth. It turned out really pretty, but I only used it to make zebra stripes. Oh and the Wilton color has a purple base. So if you are looking for true purple, use a little.
I make my ofwn MFF, but for black, red, and purple I buff the DUFF colored fondant. These are easy to roll thin, but tend to be a little too soft. So I blend in a little MFF just to beef it up a bit. Their purple is really dark purple so even mixing it half and half yields a nice purple color.

I have had great success with the homemade buttercream marshmallow fondant recipe on here, using Americolor black, and adding it just after the marshmallows have melted. Deep, rich black, with very little effort on my part! And it doesn't take a ton of coloring with the Americolor.
I make my own MMF. For black fondant, i add cocoa powder and brown color 1st followed by black. It tastes gd and the cocoa powder cuts down the sweetness too.
