I am making a three tiered cake and the bride really wants caramel SMBC (sub brown sugar for the white).

However, her theme are the sesame street colors (red, yellow, blue, and a green smash cake). She will providing candles and whatnot.

Here is my question, she really loves the SMBC, but so far, I've tried to tint a small batch both red and blue, and it just isn't coming out right. The yellow will be fine, and the green, I can tweak a bit.

Do you guys think I could make a batch of American buttercream, tint my usual red & blue colors, and pipe with a hair tip on top of the already frosted and stacked SMBC?

What do you suggest, please? (I *might* have enough time to make just regular SMBC, but that would involve me making a trip to the store)

I'm so confused, a 3 teir wedding cake and a smash cake and candles... is it a wedding or a birthday or both?

Well, let me tell you. I did it! and it turned out great. I layered american buttercream on top of swiss buttercream with no sliding issues at all.

Glad it worked out! As a quick bit about tinting icing - royal and ABC tint so vibrant because the color grabs onto the sugar crystals of the powdered sugar. There are no crystals in meringue buttercream so unless you use a TON of color they don't tint the same. They also have the natural yellow of the butter so if you add blue you can get green.

If I need to tint my SMBC I use Americolor oil based candy colors so I don't have to use as much and it blends nicely. Still no where near as dark as royal or ABC.
