Hi all,

Has anyone out there made a catamarn cake as yet? I am looking for advice / tutorials on how to carve this cake and what size cake and shape to start off with. I have never carved cakes before so this is my 1st time. The photo attached is the cake I have to do but only the boat on top not the round cake below.

Any advice on how to make a sail in terms of how to make the stencil so that it comes out proportional, whether to use all gum paste or 1/2 gum paste 1/2 fondant, etc would be helpful.

Hoping to hear from yal soon. I'm using the vanilla WASC cake for this.

Hi there, sorry for late reply, hope it is not too late for you. I am making a catamaran cake for a wedding at the moment. I have made 2 cakes that are 8" x 12" and cut each one in half lengthways to make a very long cake. I then cut our the shape by using a template that I made from a peice of card. Once I had the shape I gentely carved it to shape it to what I wanted following a picture I found in the internet of a Dart 18. Remember to only carve a little at a time, it is easy to take more off and not so easy to add it back on. Once I have the shape I will cover the whole cake in butter icing to get an even surface and then cover it with fondant. Incidentally I have a pointed bit at the fron of the hull which is difficult to shape fondant around so I will pinch the icing together and then use scissors to cut that bit of icing to make it neat. I hope that this makes sense, it is difficult to describe without showing someone visually. Good Luck, I will post a picture when I have finished mine.
