Hi all,
Apologies if this subject has been previously covered- I did a search and didn't find anything, but can't imagine nobody has asked before!
Anyway, I'm in the process of starting a small cake business (selling cupcakes at fetes and craft fairs etc, and then decorating cakes to order). As I don't have a huge amount of time OR money to spare, I'm doing my research now and was wondering what are the most popular cupcake flavours you tend to sell? Which are ordered the most or receive the best response? I wont ask to steal recipes, but just a general idea would be soooo helpful.
I want to start out with 5 or 6 flavours to offer and then add to that if I find demand is high enough (cupcakes are still relatively new here in the UK).
Any help very much appreciated!
LOl steal recipes your so funny... CC members love to help & share, ask whatever you want... You will find your answer here
Anyways IMO the most popular flavors are:
Chocolate
Vanilla
Red Velvet
Carrot Cake
& lately French Vanilla
HTH
I'm relatively new as well, but so far popular choices have been vanilla with cream cheese frosting, chocolate with chocolate cream cheese frosting, strawberry, and salted caramel.
I would start to research popular bakeries and see what they offer. I like using standby flavors but also seasonal.
Loving anything light and fruity right now when it is hot.
Thank you so much for your replies- it's good to know that good old chocolate still rates high
I am keen to try salted caramel actually and can imagine it would go down quite well!
There aren't many places specialising in cupcakes around here, mainly Starbucks and the local supermarket Not a bad thing for me though i guess!
for me its: red velvet, chocolate with chocolate ganache filling and chocolate frosting, creme brulee (macsmom recipe) filled with caramel and bavarian creme and frosting with white chocolate ganache, lemon with cream cheese frosting
Ooh the creme brulee sounds to die for!! May have to give that a try!
I was going to attempt IMBC today, until I realised I had about a 1/4 cup of butter
For me these have been the top three:
Red Velvet - even though it's not my favorite, lol
Vanilla - surprised because it's such a simple flavor
Chocolate - my favorite
I do not have a store front, so my customers order for events like birthdays, weddings, showers, etc. I find that people are more adventerous when walking into a store front. They are willing to try a Chocolate Chili cupcake but dont necessarily want a dozen or more of that flavor. Classic flavors are top sellers for my customers.
Cake Flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Lemon, and Red Velvet.
Icing Flavors: Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Chocolate, Strawberry, Fresh Whipped Cream, and Cream Cheese.
I agree with Harrisburg. You have to order 12 of mine too. I really don't stress the basics, but flavors like turtle, key lime, Reese's, lemon meringue, bananas Foster, and Guiness. But these flavors are what I'm known for. I let the customers know that if they like the flavor, they will like the cupcakes. So far, so good.
The cupcake I sell the most of is a strawberry, made from yellow cake mix, jello, and fresh frozen strawberries, filled with key lime pudding, frosted with strawberry frosting that you see with the cake recipe.
Another popular one is red velvet with cream cheese frosting that is piped in varied colors of hydrangeas.
All of my cupcakes are made from cake mix, which I make with buttermilk in place of the water, and some additional oil, especially in the red velvet.
Thanks again everyone for your comments- I am definately going to give red velvet a go. I recently bought a box of red velvet cuppies from our local big supermarket (in the UK) and they a) tasted very 'manufactured' as expected, but most shockingly b) were not red!!!! They were just chocolate cupcakes with a vanilla frosting! Nothing 'red velvet' about them!
Anyway, I've also made some creme brulee cupcakes for my daughters birthday and the one I tested was lovely Now to try that IMBC
My top 3 flavors are:
1. Chocolate Cupcake/Chocolate Buttercream
2. White Almond Cupcake/Strawberry Filling/Vanilla Buttercream
3. Cookies and Cream Cupcake/Vanilla Buttercream
Hey there - I live in New Zealand - the most popular flavours of mine are:
Banoffee
Snickers
Red Velvet
Oreo
Chocolate, vanilla bean, lemon, chocolate chai, and the last couple months, lavender and grapefruit.
I live in the USA and am not familiar with Banoffee, may I ask what the flavor is?
Hi! Banoffee is Banana Toffee (or caramel). I use a vanilla cake, pipe caramel in the center, frost with banana buttercream and drizzle with caramel. so good! probably a little bit like banana cream pie but minus the cream
These all sound fabulous! Would any of you be willing to share the recipes of your favorites?
