I just received an order for a birthday cake and she brought a picture of a crab for me to put on the cake http://www.blue-crab.org/callinectes.htm

She wants a 9 x 13 inch cake in chocolate with buttercream icing .. I was thinking of trying to make the crab out of fondant .. she said it could a cute crab but would like for me to use the colors in the crab picture on the cake...

any suggestions and all suggestions are welcome!! I'm too tired to think ... I'm still recovering from over a 165 hours working at emergency shelters

I have seen several posts recently about painting on fondant. I think that pic would be relatively easy to do on fondant. I haven't painted on fondant but I have painted on a BCT before. I used thinned piping gel. I think you can also use the color gel mixed with water. The one I did is the hello kitty CCC in my photos. You could also try doing a BCT either the regular way or painting on it.

Bless you for helping out usaribbon.gif ! I have donated clothes but I wish I was closer so I could help out in person. My youngest starts preschool next week so I will have some free time.

Hope that helps!

Do you have access to an edible image printer? If you do you could put the image on fondant and cut it out. I have a crab cookie cutter I use and cut crabs from fondant and after the fondant dries I spray it with the color sprays. My crabs are steamed so I use red and orange spray but you could use blue and green for the live crab look.

I have never gotten a chance to unstop the print nozzles on my printhead for my edible images... so I'll have to make the crab out of fondant some how ... I plan to use blue/brown shades for the crab... I just hope it comes out to this lady's satisfaction. I think she'll be a bit on the "picky" side .. she gave me that impression.

Depending on the cost then, if she is going to be a "picky" one, maybe you can find someplace to print an edible image of that exact crab for you if you have the time and can find a place. I know I have seen posts here where people have found places that print them.

Here is cute blue crab but it doesn't have all the colors she wants:

GOOD LUCK!

You could try doing a royal icing runout. That picture looks like it should work well

She ordered the cake for today and I have to bring to work with me tomorrow... do you think it would dry that fast?

Royal icing no. In that length of time I would try painting the crab directly onto the fondant . Do the outline first with a black food colouring pen the paint using petal dust mixed with clear alcohol
