Wow!!! After receiving an email from Michael's about new bakeware items and checking a few things out online, I decided to hit the nearest Micheal's during my lunch break today... WOW, I'M IN HEAVEN!!!

Both Wilton and Duff have up-ed thir game!! It's GREAT. I saw things from aribrush machine, airbrush colors, sugar sheets, new gumpaste flower tools, impression silicone molds, leaf vein impression mat, cutting mats.. OMG, my head was SPINNING!!!

I was just so excited to see these new "toys" since it had been a while since they came out with cool stuff and I always had to go look elsewhere for a few tools or improvise.

Oh and let's not forget their new punch it thingie was also in the store as well along with their design templates. Since I only had a few minutes to "visit with" the new products, I didn't get proper names of all but check online and you can see what I'm talking about.

they have a sale of buy 2 items and get 3rd free so maybe along with some coupons the damage won't be so bad. Who else is excited about this? Anyone?

Nah....Wilton is more like playing "catch-up".

I've been purchasing my supplies from other vendors for years, plus being an ICES member, I get my share of new "toys" when I go to the conventions each year! icon_biggrin.gif Got my empty suitcase ready and waiting to be filled for this year! thumbs_up.gif

Cakedout, I can totally understand that. But I can also see Caferock05's excitement to. Personally I do like to see things before I buy them so I am happy that you can get more stuff locally, especially when you don't have a cake store around. While I won't stock up on airbrush colors from Michaels, I like knowing that if I ran out of a color I could quickly replace it if I needed too.

Caferock05, just so you know, you won't be able to use coupons with the Wilton sale items. I tried the other night and they wouldn't do it. I didn't even get to use my store discount either. icon_sad.gif

There are some coupons coming up for next week, a 50% off one item Sunday. 20% off purchase including sale items on Monday. Plus a 40% off for the rest of the week.

I do agree they are "catching up", cakedout, however you also have to see they are catering more towards the "home bakers" and not those on a "professional" level so to speak. It's exciting to see new items, even though I've seen/purchased similar ones from other sites months ago. But I really do like the cosmetics behind the Duff and Wilton products. With Michael's coupons, I can say I have saved money on items that if I were to purchase from the professional bake supply shop near me(which also carries the same Wilton supplies), you can't apply or use. That's another reason behind my excitement.

Texas sugar, Thanks for the coupon info, I won't get my hopes up on doubling discounts. I was hoping they would have that 3 for 2 sale hold off until Sunday with that extra 20%, that would make it nice and those 50% off's you have to take advantage of those "puppies" since all I ever see are 40%'s. I also notced the fondant price went up as well.

I'm sure the two for one sale will be over Saturday night since they usually run Sun to Sat.

I only bought three things this week. Two boxes of candles and one of the color dusts. There are some things I want, but I'm waiting to use coupons on them. I'm not sure which is better savings, but at least that way I can space the spending out some.

I found out by "surprise" last week! I had to run to Michaels to get a cake box, I told my husband I was just gonna run out real quick, but I was probably gone an hour! I was busy inspecting all the new cool stuff! My local cake supply store is 30 minutes away and I do order offline but you can't "touch and feel" before you buy and you have to pay shipping (and then wait)... so it is nice to have a larger selection of cake tools right down the street! Not so say I will go out and buy a ton of it... There is the issue of quality and "you get what you pay for," but it is nice to know that the selection is far less limited.

Besides, cake stuff is fun to play with and look at!

Just came from Michael's. Got two of the silacone impression molds, and the two fondant tweezers. One free, used coupon, so second tweezers were only a couple of bucks! Computer register took coupon no problem- yay!

Not sure if anyone knows about this site but it is a place where you can print as many coupons for many different company's including Michaels/AC moore & I think Hobby Lobby. I have also purchased the New Gumpaste flower kit (love it) and a few other things too. But the site is and they will email you new coupons.

http://dealspl.us/

Everytime I need to go I print a coupon or seven lol use them as I go and sometimes give them to others in the cake isle. icon_smile.gif Gotta pass on the discounts... hope this helps

I went into Michael's last night too and was surprised and excited! I also agree that they are catering to the home baker. I purchased some tools needed for some upcoming cakes with the buy two get one free sale. There are some Wilton classes being offered in the near future at my store so they were also offering 50% off of the decorator kits. There were many people in there buying their supplies. I am a hobby baker so it is convenient for me to run into Michael's and purchase something that I don't need in bulk.. on sale of course! icon_biggrin.gif

I was excited too, but kind of wanted to hide it from everyone else. I feel like with the sugar sheets and the punches it makes deocrating easy for anyone and not a novelty that I do. I know you still have to have skill, because you can punch out some sugar circles and put them on a nasty cake with lumpy frosting, but that was my first reaction. That they were making things almost too easy.

I'm sorry to be a grinch about this, but I have yet to see anything but tacky, tacky, tacky cakes made with the Wilton punches (they all came from the Wilton website). I'd be really happy if someone would post something creative and PRETTY, but so far, no. To me, it's just Wilton's way of trying to sell you more stuff you don't really need. Of course it may just be me being grouchy because I don't have a Michael's nearby, 'cause they have great stuff, generally speaking. I'm compiling such a LIST for when I go to the States next!

In my area, Michael's has gotten pretty picky about taking only one coupon per day, per customer, but.....I can go to Joann's and they will take as many coupons as I can provide and use them on anything that is not already discounted. icon_biggrin.gif

I was like a kid in a candy store at Michaels! Wow....I love all the new stuff. The closest cake supply store is 40 mins away so its hard to get there as often as I need sometimes. So its nice to have more things in Michaels. Plus the cupons are great

I'm wanting to try the sugar sheets with my cricut, I used one this week with my regular cookie cutters, they were ok but they definatly need scrapbooking punches or the cricut. I also bought the circle cutter, worked great for cutting a circle to cover a RKT grad cap, I also bought one of the silicone molds, which I loved. for $10 (less with your coupons) they're great little molds to have, hope they come out with more. Im not much into duffs stuff so can't really comment. But I do like that Michaels has a bigger caking section now

Caking is going to becomes just like DJ-ing. I have a full service event company. We do everything, cake, DJ, catering, coordinating - decorating, everything. Just a few years ago DJs easily got $1200 for a wedding. Now, we are lucky to get $500 and $350 is more typical.

iPods have killed us. People now DJ their own weddings. Is it the same service and quality? Heck no! Can we convince them of this before it's too late? Heck no! I see the same thing happening to caking. More and more people are thinking Aunt Bertha can do the wedding cake cause she dabbles in cake decorating all the time - using ,inferior Wilton products because she is simply a dabbler - she doesn't know there are better products out there. But it's not the same, and the quality is usually not up to wedding par (sometimes it is ,and yay! when that happens). But you cannot convince the bride until it's much too late.

I cannot tell you then number of weddings I have catered where I cannot convince them to hire a professional DJ or cake decorator and they won't. I tell them even if it's not my company - please, hire a professional. Your wedding is a one shot deal. Still they won't. But at the reception they are telling me how right I was and they wish they had listened... and I mean every single time!

Go figure - - - - a wedding professional might actually know what he or she is taking about. Hmmm... what a concept!

So, now I'm wondering what's gonna happen next to replace us caterers. Not sure what it will be - but it will happen somewhere down the line. And the wedding quality will just sink further down.
