Just got done making the parts for some gumpaste hibiscus. Now on to the margarita (for on the cake, not me!). Cake is baked. Will fill, ice and decorate tomorrow.

It's Kentucky Derby weekend! Who-hoo!!

There are no weddings in Louisville this weekend. All florists are decorating Derby parties/galas and balls. Ditto caterers providing and serving food. Ditto photographers taking pictures on the red carpets.

This is THE weekend to be in Louisville!

Cut all my pieces earlier today, praying they dry for a 3d baby grand piano. I hope it turns out like I am seeing in my mind. Baked one layer of the sheet cake, now onto the next one. Still need to make some flowers and then Chocolate mousse, chocolate buttercream and ice and decoarte tomorrow.

Derby! My daughter was part of the wait staff on Millionaire's Row one year. She still has the scars on her feet from the blisters!
I have nothing this weekend. Tomorrow we are working on the new building!! Posts go in the ground.
I spent 3 days in northern Alabama serving meals to disaster victims. The devastation will stay with me for a long time!
I will work on flowers for a shower cake next weekend. One of my last freebies!
I am tired-off to bed soon....

All of the boys have Lacrosse or Baseball games in the morning and have to be at the field at 8:00am. After the games tomorrow I have a cupcake wedding thankfully I finished it this afternoon around 4 pm.

Only had 1 cake for this weekend and sent it out the door @ 6:00 this evening. Will start making roses on Monday for next Saturdays wedding cake and have a b-day cake for midweek. This is the only weekend this month that I don't have a wedding cake to do, so I am taking advantage of it and going to spend some time with the family.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
Happy Mothers Day to you all!
Vickey

Hello everyone!

It's be awhile since I've been here on a Friday night! My younger daughter had their baby on the 14th (gorgeous little boy named Parker) and I was at their house for 12 days (still had cakes to go but they were local to her house and I have a friend who owns a diner that let me use her kitchen). I just get home and it's my son's 10th birthday so I had his cake to do and so now we are up to this weekend and Mother's Day. This is a special one here in our family. My mom turns 70 in December this year and we are taking her to Disneyland to celebrate...the whole family is going...gonna be something like 22 of us there! We are surprising her tomorrow night at a "Mother's Day Dinner". So the cake had to be grand enough for a 70th birthday yet Disney yet elegant too for Mother's Day. I came up with a coconut creation (her fave cake) that I think fits the bill. I just uploaded it into my photos...can't wait for her to see it tomorrow and give her this gift that we have been working on since her last birthday and finally not have to keep it secret anymore!

I won't be around for a few more weeks. My mom and I will be off to Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Leichtenstein for two weeks starting Wednesday. Then, like Leah, it's 4 months of booked solid, starting with a wedding cake the first week of June!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Cat

Finishing up some gumpaste pieces for a 1st Communion cake. Totally procrastinating on the chalice. Since it's the last thing left to do here I am on CakeCentral dragging my butt a little bit more. LOL! Motivation has been tough to wrangle in today. icon_biggrin.gif

Finished a sculpted #2 birthday cake; a sheetcake filled with strawberries for Mother's Day and May birthdays, and a full sheet cake for the Methodist church confirmants. Debating (posted question) about if I should do a cake due Sunday but to be eaten on Monday while my cake decorating stuff is still all out. icon_smile.gif

I've been trying to ice and fondant two cakes since 7 o'clock tonight. Finally got the fondant on but one looks bad and I don't think the decorations will cover it all. It's pock marked and you can see the filling line. I'm debating whether to cover it with another layer of fondant or strip it and start again. I think parts of it have too much icing. Turns out sugarshack may start with an inch of frosting and scrape it down to less than half (thereabouts), but I can't come anywhere near that without ending up with way too much frosting to cover a cake in fondant.

It's been a long, frustrating week prepping the stuff for this cake and I was really hoping tonight would be easy.

As it usually happens I don't have much to do for a couple of weekends then all of a sudden I have many orders for one weekend. My spurt will be next weekend. I am proscratinating on getting the gumpaste butterflies, flowers, and bows, and bulldog done for next week.

I'm making cakeballs for tomorrow's lunch for the guests to take to the track. Geez, I can't wait for my cake ball roller to come in the mail.

cheatize, 1/2" of bc is still too much under fondant, IMO. 1/4" would be fine.

Leah, that's what I usually use: about 1/4 inch. Lesson learned.

Does anyone know, when you put a second layer of fondant on a cake, do you put anything on the first layer to make them stick together? On the one hand, you want it to seem like there's only one layer. On the other hand, putting anything on it to make it stick together seems like it would make it impossible to smooth the second layer.

Yea, you have to spritz the first payer with water, or the second layer just doesn't stick to the first layer of fondant.
