Wtf does that even mean? Did you ever have any one tell you that? I am baking for a wedding as a favor (at my expense) and this bride has never even thanked me.

My husband works with her husband so I am trying to make nice, but seriously, how many samples do you make for people? Her husband told me that the 3 cupcake flavors I made were fine for the wedding and also said the 6" tier cake design for the top of the cupcake tower that I proposed was perfect.

I spoke to her for the first time today and she doesn't like anything and acted as if I work for her. Grrr! I am ready to say that I don't think I can handle this and walk away. I just don't want things to be weird for my husband. /sigh

Any suggestions? Thanks for listening. icon_sad.gif

I would be very leery of doing anything for a person who would need the concept of cupcakes (cake in a cup? hello?) explained to them.

Yeah... fire her as a "client".

"Ummm... a cupcake *is* cake sweetie and if you don't like what I've baked then maybe you need to go and PAY for your wedding cake."

I'd honestly have a conversation with her and let her know that you don't think that you will be able to work together and leave her time to fond someone else.

That stinks that she's acting like a super diva. I mean for her to expect to get nice service is one thing, but she shouldn't be treating you like that.

Tell her how it works in real life. You get ONE tasting... either you like it or you don't. If you do then great... we'll work together. If you don't then please pass through the door and find another baker. No way should you be making anymore smaples for her unless she pays for them.

Thanks guys, your replies helped. The wedding is a little less than 6 weeks away. It's for about 100 people. That's enough time for her to find someone else isn't it?

May I ask a couple of questions? Are the husbands on the same level or does one work above the other? Did you and the bride discuss flavors prior to your making samples? Yes, the groom has a "say" however, we all know he really doesn't at the end of the day. Is the favor for your husband or are you both friends with the couple?

With how she has treated you, I would say walk away and it is up to her to find someone to do her cake in 6 weeks. You are very nice for offering to do this and even nicer for worrying about if she will have time to find another baker icon_wink.gif . The bottom line is that she is unhappy (she doesn't know that a cupcake is cake and will taste like such) and she has already been a pain. You were nice enough to offer the cake and samples for free. Your husband shouldn't feel weird about this because the BTB was obviously looking for something else-I would let that be her own problem to solve. thumbs_up.gif

OMG! I can't believe the lady really said that to you. Honestly, what did she expect it to taste like?
I agree w/everyone, you don't need to be doing any favors for people who are not appreciative. If it were a client that was paying then maybe I'd understand but as a favor, NO WAY!
I think 6 weeks is plenty of time, she'll have to pay a pretty penny for it, but I think she deserves it after treating you that way!

Sure! icon_smile.gif Our husbands are on the same level.

Yes, they told me which ones they wanted to try. (One which was a champagne with chocolate dipped strawberries on top, which was expensive to make).

I have never met them. I send cupcakes to work w/ my husband from time to time and the groom-to-be loves them, so that's why he asked me. I said no because I am not a professional baker, and he and my husband talked me into it.

As for the husband not having a say, I am lucky that I got a response from someone. And that's only because I made my husband bug him to answer my email. She never responded to me except for once.

Wow - You weren't kidding when you said you were doing it as a favor. I would have a sit down with your husband and explain why you aren't going to do this "favor" anymore.

Then I would email the groom and blind copy yourself so nothing is misconstrued and politely explain the following: "Cupcakes are in fact cake, just much smaller versions. I provided samples of the flavors you requested and I do apologize that none of them met with your approval. I am not a professional baker and I would like to suggest that you consult with one so that you can have the confections that will exceed your expectations on this most important day. Thank you. "

I would tell husband's co-worker that you were surprised by her reaction and that you do not feel comfortable experimenting with new recipes just to please one person. If your tastings are not what she was hoping for then she should find someone that she will be happy with so as not to spoil her special day.

Who cares if 6 weeks is or isn't enough time for her to find someone else!? LOL if she's treating you like that, that's her own fault if she gets herself fired!!

How do we weed people like this out?? I'm trying to think of verbiage to post on my FB page & website. Maybe something like this will work:

"We have the right to refuse service to anyone, which includes, but is not limited to: Snotty, Catty, Obnoxious, Rude and/or Ungreatful people"

Any comments? Suggestions? hahaha

Their money is just as green as anyone else's, but it's not worth my time and mental health!

I've shared this before but here's a link from a very successful caterer in Texas .... scroll to the bottom of the page for his Bridezilla clause. It's vague and generic .... and just enough to allow him to cancel at his discretion!

Good advice from all of you, thanks so much.

If you guys only knew how much money I have already spent on this. They were supposed to pay for the cupcake stand $130, the monogram stamp for the cupcakes $45, the bulk candy $50 (I was going to do a dessert table for them), tablecloth $20, I went and ordered all of this on my credit card just to get it out of the way. I never dreamed things wouldn't be ok.

At this point it's worth it to me eat the money because I am sick of being treated like sh!t. I'm so glad it's Cinco de Mayo because I have a reason to pull the margarita maker out tonight...

Thanks maitej, I think it allows Takeelah to bow out gracefully while reminding Bridezilla (in a subtle way) that it was in fact a favor (a VERY generous one on her part), takes away the awkwardness for her husband at work and she can still send her yummy treats to the office. icon_lol.gif

Chalk the expense up as "Cake Stupid Tax" and let it go....at least you have cool stand, stamps, and yum candy! And DON'T send the candy w/the hubby to work! Give it to the neighbor kids! They'll love you for it! icon_biggrin.gif

***And yes, she has plenty of time to go look for someone else......I "fired" a "free" client last week, boy did I ever feel r-e-l-i-e-v-e-d whew! She ended up going to a grocery store. Whoop-d-doo!***

I would answer her - "You should probably go to Walmart, they can fill an order placed less than six weeks away in a heartbeat, and they have both cake and the lesser known mysterious cupcakes in a wide variety of colors"

Some folks don't know when they have it good...that's why I am a hobby baker and don't work for the public.

Not harsh at all Kiddiekakes! And you guys will not believe this...

So last night, my husband and I were trying to figure out the best way to bow out of this and we decided, that I was going to send an email using tips and words from you guys. (I love cc and now my husband does too!)

Well, about 10pm last night, I get an email from bridezilla. There was no greeting at all, she got straight to business:

It was entitled, "This is What I Want" and it included the picture of a larger cupcake tower and the text, "I don't know if you bought the stand but this one is bigger, we do have 200 guests, what do u think about this one?" icon_eek.gif

LoL, I almost died. They knew darn well I bought the stand because they were supposed to reimburse me for it. They also told me the wedding was for 100 guests, and like nothing she just nonchalantly dropped it on me that I would be baking for 200. At that moment my husband and I realized it was karma, because it was a legitimate way out w/o any hard feelings between he and his coworker!

I have a small kitchen, and there is no way I have the room or the equipment (I've already spent enough on her), to bake for 200 people. I'm not a professional, I just bake for fun, it would just be too large of a job for me. And it was going to be a stretch to transport everything in both of our vehicles as it was. So, I sent them an email last night explaining this.

Everything should be fine between my husband and his coworker and he will never know that I almost bowed out before that because of his blushing bridezilla. We all know the truth though, don't we?! icon_razz.gif

Thanks to everyone for your support!

She actually wrote back and said, "I'm sorry you didn't know, but thanks for all your effort." I think she is happy because she obviously didn't like my cupcakes, LoL.

At work, her husband said to my husband, "It's cool. The wedding has just gotten out of hand." From what my husband can gather, they had a lot of people add pluses (plusses? Is that even a word?) to their invitations that weren't invited and were offended that they weren't. So they are stressed.

I'm just happy I'm out of it! thumbs_up.gif
