I have been asked to make a cake using a technique I have never done before. I thought I would research it but I don't know what it is called! And NOW I can't even find a picture of it to ask! icon_cry.gif
It kind of looks sloppy. Looks like someone applied the butter cream with the back of a spoon, in these little fan shapes all over the entire cake. It looks really cool but I have no idea what I am doing... madhatter.gif Any help would be much appreciated!

Can't find the picture I'm looking for, but do you mean a bit like the cake in the first link, but with the texture looking very deliberate and even (does that make sense?)

Looks like it was piped on with a petal tip.

I think you do just 'trowel' the buttercream on with the back of a spoon, or the tip of palette knife.

That's exactly the sort of picture I was trying to find for the OP, without success. Piping dots makes so much sense!

I love that! I am saving it for another cake I have to do. Are you a member of their school? I'd love to know if it is worth it!

But that is not exactly what I was looking for this time. I want it to be somewhere in between this...

Not as messy as the fist but not as clean as the second. Do you think piping dots would work for this technique as well?

You don't need to go to the effort of piping dots for that look.

Look in my photos. The wedding cake with the long stemmed roses illusion was done sorta that way. I just piled the buttercream icing on really thick and with my spatula (you can use a knife or spoon if you prefer), I just sorta swooped it. Sorta a stucco look.

I'm a member of My Cake School, and have learned alot from Melissa. I'm a very visual person, so watching her videos has been very helpful to me in learning new techniques. I probably watch a video every other day, even if I've already seen it. Well worth the $30, I think.
