I am in discussions with Maureen who supplies the levellers to purchase one but I am a bit confused about the shipping etc.. She charges for the shipping which I presume just gets to the UK. Then it goes to customs, then to a local delivery service before it gets to me. Maureen said that some companies charge extra for this, some don't, she doesn't know the reason why. Has anyone had any experience of this? Will I also be made to pay extra tax at customs?

Hi there, I am thinking of buying one but going to get it when i am in the USA. there is always the risk that you will be hit with customs tax this end if it is not marked as a "gift" and unfortunately normally you are liable for it as someone like DHL will keep the parcel, send you a letter informing you of the tax payable and they also levy their own charge for sending it on to you and holding it in the meantime! i know its a nightmare!

I have been thinking about getting one of these off ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cake-Slicer-Saw-3-different-sections-sugarcraft-cutter_W0QQitemZ170629711859QQcategoryZ57211QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DDLSL%252BSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D8%26pmod%3D360357319317%252B360357319317%26po%3D%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8542508307277968023

I know its probably no where near as good as the Agbay but it's surely better than the wilton rubbish!

I was going to ask the seller about replacement blades though before I got one.

mmm not sure about that one doesn't look too easy to adjust. Maybe worth asking too about returns. yeah i know what you mean I got the wilton and it was awful - i got the big one. My cake went from a few inches to almost zero inside as it flexed while cutting through. had to bake a whole new cake icon_sad.gif

I arrived back from USA this morning with my agbay. I spoke to Maureen before I went and she shipped the agbay to my hotel then I brought it home in my luggage. I have heard lots of stories of high customs charges (on any purchases, not specifically an agbay) so didn't want to risk ordering it for delivery straight to the UK.

I have not purchased the agbay, but last year I ordered some copper cookie cutters from a US website, and ended up paying taxes to customs and I think I may have had to pay for the delivery this side as well - anyway they ended up being expensive cookie cutters! do you have anyone you know visiting the USA who would kindly bring the item back for you, this is the most economical way of obtaining it. When myself and my husband have visited the United States he often brings back work tools eg; hammers etc. as they are much cheaper than here, he packs them in his suitcase and declares them at check-in, they ususally just put a sticker on the case stating that it contains construction tools, we never had any problem coming through customs (but went through GREEN and not RED) icon_lol.gif

I spoke to Maureen about I week before I went away and she shipped it so it arrived 4 days after I got to the hotel (we arrived on a Friday, the agbay arrived on the Monday). She sent me e mails to confirm when UPS were due to deliver so I knew when to expect it. It's currently sitting waiting to cut it's first cake!!

I have one... seriously the money is worth it. My boyfriend bought me mine for my birthday, so I don't know if he paid customs or not but it is so worth it. I use mine on every single cake. I wouldn't give it up for anything, I think I'd cry if it broke lol It's seriously that good!!

I've wanted one too but have been put off by this. I've ordered stuff from the US & DHL delivered it & 3 months later I got a bill for £200 from them. I got items delivered Xmas 2009 & got a card to say I needed to pay customs charges at my local PO. However I ordered the same items last September & didn't get a customs charge. So basically it's anyone's guess.

And I totally agree about the Wilton one, it's a complete waste of time & money. I couldn't even get mine to cut through the cake (no my cake's not that bad icon_lol.gif )

Lisapeps, would it be possible if you can find out from your boyfriend exactly how much the whole thing was? I would really appreciate it as I am so desperate to get it. Would it amount to £100 over the actal price or more?

He paid $175 for the agbay (single blade upgradeable), $7 for the blade cleaning tool, $2 for the replacement knob, $53.50 for postage.

Total $237.50 at an exchange rate of 1 GBP = 1.50459 USD which I believe is about £160..

This was September last year so exchange rates will vary. He's going to find out what the customs charge was when he gets back from work so I'll let you know then.

He said the customs charge was £39.55, that was last September though so it could have gone up since then.

That doesn't sound like much but I am really confused as there is a big difference between £200 as someone quoted and £39?.... Don't know whether to take the gamble...

That's the exact charge he got, he looked at his baking receipts. I can't recommend this product enough. I wouldn't give it up for anything.

AI really want an agbay too but also scared of additional charges. Has anyone found an alternative in the uk that works (I too have the useless Wilton one) which I can use whilst I save up for the agbay!
