Hi my name is Lisa would love to here from anyone that may have an idea how to create straw/hay for a cake that I'm doing. Thanks for your Time
Not knowing the answer to the question above, I would use a clay gun with the multiple teeny tiny holes.
I'm starting a cake tomorrow that is a saddle on a bale of hay, near life size. I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking on using a butter cream base then doing some piping like strings and adding a lot of fondant gumpaste strands using a pizza wheel cutting different width between 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. If someone has another idea, I'm more than thankful to hear it thanks
The hay bales in my pics were done with the "grass" tip and different colors of icing put into the bag at the same time. Worked like a charm.
Have you heard of Kataifi Dough? It is the shredded cousin to Fillo dough. You know, the stuff Baklava is made from. Well you can buy Kataifi dough uncooked and already shredded. It is shredded pretty finely so it would make realistic looking hay. You defrost it and pull it apart to loosen it. Then you form your hay bundles and put them in the oven to cook. It will crisp and even brown if you want. Once crisp you could airbrush some color to make them look like hay. Try googling Kataifi dough or the ultimate guide to greek food dot com. theres a pictorial on how it is being loosened and you can see what it looks like when its raw and when its cooked. Hope that helped and good luck!
If you look in my pictures you will see a flower cart cake with a hay bale on it. This was for competition so it's iced with royal but you can do it with buttercream. I dyed coconut four different colors of yellow and brown then mixed together and patted into the icing. After you get a good coating of coconut, add some fondant wires. Its easy and has nice texture.
Thanks everyone for your great ideas on how to make straw .Somethings are so hard to find in the world of cakes ,there is so much more variety in the USA then here in Australia .
All the ideas are great thanks again ,Lisa
I am very new to cake making but for the loose straw I put in the wine cake in my photos i used a pasta machine. First running the sugarpaste through to roll iit out thin and then running it through the spaghetti cutting side.

I love the stuff I learn on this site! Thanks Im off to google!
I know this is a simple idea but I thought it looked cool on my cowgirl cake and the customer loved it! I used 3 "bales" of plain full-size shredded wheat and cut the ends off and stacked them off setting them. Good luck!
