Rosette Cakes - Just Wondering
Decorating By heysugar504 Updated 5 Mar 2011 , 1:37am by imagenthatnj
I've seen an explosion of rosette cakes on CC lately. It seems like they always end up in the Top Faves. Personally, I don't find them all that lovely, even when well executed. They seem pretty simple.
I'm just wondering if others could give me their perspective on them. What do you find so nice about them? What's the big deal?
Thanks!
One reason they are so popular is the originator of the design is Amanda from her blog, I Am Baker, she has quite a following and is so fun to read and has amazing ideas.....on top of all that the photography on her blog is so amazing and I can see why so many on here have tried to replicate the cake....and as far as the repeat performances day after day of the "rosette" cake, I think that's due in part to people logging in on random days and seeing this cake for the first time. Some of us, who are on here everyday definitely see that certain similar cake designs keep popping up day after day, but the less compulsive CC'ers may not have gotten a chance to see it....another appeal to it is that it's a very easy beginner design and a lot of people will save it because they tend to favorite cakes they will want to make someday. So yeah the rosette cake will probably be hanging out in the favs for a while until everyones gotten their chance to view it...honestly, though I'm a little tired of seeing it myself, sort of like zebra print cakes...
hey sugar- I'm half laughing and embarrassed that I threw the extra "dis" on zebra print cakes...lol I clicked on your pics and see the first pic is a zebra print cake I have a zebra print in my collection too, and I'm so tired of the look! Anyways no hard feelings okay!
Wow. That was a little uncalled for. That cake was a request from someone. Not like I just got a wild hair to make one.
I saw the rosette design on I Am Baker too but was more interested in her vertical cake layers than the rosettes. Sorry you took it so personally, but it's not a dig at anyone. I was just wondering if someone could explain what the draw was from their perspective. Your response, up until the end, was what I was hoping to hear from folks.
woah! I'm a little baffled by your response. All I did was explain my own perspective on the rosette cake's popularity and it's continued appearances...and likened the multiple postings of it to the zebra print cakes....AND then I post again to say no offense to your own zebra cake (as I have a zebra print of my own in my pics!)
As far as I can tell ... NOTHING in my previous posts are what anyone would consider "uncalled for".
Maybe you didn't read my posts correctly?

Are you saying here that you saw my cake AFTER you posted? In that case, yes, I did misunderstand.
wasn't sure if i was willing to through my 2 cents in or not...but oh well. i think the rosette cakes have become popular because of their ease of decoration. and since they are simply buttercream swirls, instead of gumpaste or fondant roses, they are cheaper and less time consuming. customers see these and say...wow! that is cheap but still elegant! side note...i think it was a misunderstanding on the zebra print...corrie76 was saying that the zebra print design kinda got huge overnight, and now you see a lot of them...just like the rosette cakes...no one was trying to put down anyone elses cake designs...again...misunderstanding...
When I read it now, I see it that I misunderstood. Sometimes it's hard to totally grasp meaning in writing. Sorry about that.
I just thought I'd ask because everytime I saw a rosette cake, I'd say, What's the deal with this cake? I think of it in the same way I would think of it if I started seeing a bunch of completely orange cakes with yellow stripes. You'd just kinda say, "What's the deal with these cakes?"
I think they're popular because they're easy to make and it's all buttercream, and you don't have to smooth it! and they look pretty.
Not sure why they all go to the "most saved" though. I don't agree with that.
On the other hand, Amanda is amazing. Who would have thought that simple cakes could look so pretty? I just got the email from her blog, and I'm sure we'll start seeing these too:

That's a pretty good use of a simple decorating tip.
I think often times, when you frequent CC pretty often, you can become bored with certain designs that are repeated over and over again. But often times, it is the customers that are requesting them, and as we all know..."The customer is ALWAYS right" Right! We have to remember that the customer doesn't see the designs as repeatedly as we do usually. I'm not a fan of the rosettes either, but if you are a newcomer to caking they are an easy solution for someone that has not learned how to make buttercream, fondant, or gumpaste roses yet.
I love the rosette cakes because of the simplicity and elegance of the cake. I am a beginner at caking and it is a matter of practicing for me as well. Using all BC and maneuvering the piping bag comes into play with this kind of cake which helps me get better. Also, a lot of time I will see cakes for the first time thinking it is the first one of its kind and say, "Oh that's great I want to try that" and then I will later see that is has been done many times before so even though it may seem overdone, someone may be seeing it for the first time.
Since Amandas BLog I have seen alot more of them, And I STILL think they were nice lol, and have so much potential to be unique.
If you dont like them, do make them, why do you have to whine about other people liking them?
I really love Amanda's blog. She has some really cool tips out there that I'd like to try. I really liked the vertical cake layers but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try it. LOL!
Motherofgrace - I wasn't "whining" about anyone making them. I quite clearly asked for opinions of others. After reading them, I understand more what people see in them. Sheesh.
Imagenthatnj- That is really cute. I think I understand now. The point is to make something elegant, simply.
Thanks for the insight guys!

I'll go first to make up for jumping the gun earlier.
Something I won't be making is the one with homemade sprinkles...yikes...did I see there that you have to pipe them dot by dot? Patience.
And, I never saw anyone making this one! More patience.

Maybe that's why everyone makes the rosette one. Believe it or not, nobody was giving any credit to Amanda when this started. I had to write it in the comments. Hopefully everyone will know now where they come from.
oh my goodness at the link imagen posted! My hands hurt just looking at all that fine piping!
That one requires the patience of Job! If I ever made that one, the letters would be A LOT bigger. LOL
Is this a rosette cake?
