How Long Do I Have To Wait Until....

I usually fill and crumb coat my cakes...then the next day cover with fondant or what have you..this way it settles overnight and if i'm covering with fondant... i have to bulging issues...

i have a filled and crumb coated 10 inch round sitting here (double layered.. so 10 inch x 4..)...i did that at 4 pm....although normally i wait overnight to ensure no bulging issues...tomorrow is my birthday and i would LOVE to get a head start on this thing so my entire afternoon isn't 'cake".....how long do i have to wait before i can cover with my MMF????

I always fill, crumb coat, and cover the same day...I've never had bulging issues. I make sure I put a "dam" around each layer before I spread my filling and stack. I do work with my cakes cold, so maybe that's how I've been lucky with no bulging. Maybe pop your cake in the fridge for a bit before you cover with fondant?

I usually do the same thing, but if I don't have time to wait over night, I will put in the fridge for a few hours. I think as long as your icing has crusted, you're fine! icon_smile.gif

If you have a thick icing dam holding in your filling, then you can cover your cake with fondant virtually right after crumb coating without fear of bulging. I pipe a thick icing dam, fill, crumb coat, and cover with fondant right away.

wow. .and hear i am always waiting over night... lol..

i did use a dam so i should be fine.. i have never put my cakes in the frig..but in it goes!!!!! is an hour enough time???

Should be. I don't typically refrigerate mine at all before covering - but I have a few times.

Happy Birthday! You share it with my son. My birthday is on Saturday and I am working on a cake for my great nephew tonight/tomorrow so I don't have to work on it Saturday. Ironically, I make cakes for everyone else's birthday, but not one for me. icon_sad.gif

You can always speed up the settling process by stacking and placing a weighted object (I read some ppl use a tile or something...I use the cake pan I just used TBH). Put some parchment under the object to avoid sticking.

This is what I do, only I wrap it tightly with saran wrap which covers the top of the cake and keeps the stuff inside from smooshing out down the sides.
